In June, I purchased a 2009 Toyota Corola base model. I, being a moron, didn't realize it didn't have cruise control, which is a must. I've called around to several dealers, and they say it cannot be installed OEM or aftermarket, for my year (and presumably the 2010's as well), that do not come with it out of the factory.
So I'm stuck with a car with no cruise control, and I average 30-40K a year driving. This sucks.
What are my options here? I owe 12K on the car through Toyota Financial. It seems tempting to downgrade to an older model, but perhaps an LE or XRS, since it comes with all the bells and whistles. I'm not real familiar with how this stuff works, though, and it sounds like an awful lot of trouble to have to pay for my ignorance. I'd probably get screwed on a trade-in. The car had 14K miles when I got it, and it now has 20K.
I called a different Toyota dealer and they said they can install an aftermarket cruise control unit. They said a different company will come to the dealer, to do the install, and that it's $595+tax for the part and install. What do you think? I don't mind paying it, so long as it gets done right, of course. I'm sure I could probably do better, but not sure where. When I search my area (using Google) for automotive technicians or installers, I don't get much to go by.
jasphair this suggestion from pinoyesv6 is your best bet. find out if u can install it by yourself or if you have to hire a qualified automotive technician/electrician to install it for you.
Installation instructions are on the right side of that page, so you should be able to decide if you could tackle this by yourself or not. Looks somewhat complicated, but with the instructions I'm sure its very do-able.
You can order all the factory parts you need from any dealer, or alternatively get a kit from TRDsparks, etc. I believe the kit may be a regional thing, not sure about the USA.
In Canada the accessory listing just lists the factory parts needed to add cruise to a car that didn't come with it.
I did this on my 05 CE. The GM Vibe part from Rock Auto was considerably cheaper than the Rostra or Toyota part. I didn't use the cutting die shown in the PDF, I just used a wood boring bit with my cordless drill. It was really easy on the 9th gen and I expect it'd be very similar on the 10th gen.
