I'm thinking about upgrading them but have heard this might be a problem cause they are wired in series with the woofer. any thoughts on the matter?

let us say you choose to spend out of you own pocket and buy a different brand of tweeters at any auto audio shop and you plan to install them yourself, the way you will wire your newly bought tweeters would have to be the same as your old tweeters. all speakers including tweeters are constructed the same way.
the positive wire that was connected on the old tweeter will have to go to the positive side of the new tweeter. same goes with the negative wire from the old tweeter which goes to the negative side of the new tweeter.
