Comparison of Fuel Efficient

Good evening. I have a 2005 Toyota Corolla Sport.

I was looking at the 2010 Toyota Corolla Sport.

I was wondering if the 2010 is more fuel efficient then the 2005 model?

For all of you have that 2009/10 models, what do you think of them? A good car?

I might considering getting one.

The new ones are bigger, more roomier, better looking, come with more standard options, and fuel efficient as well. i have an XRS and i am happy with its fuel efficiency, so i can imagine the S and others are definitly better on that part. also largely depends on what upgrades you are looking for in a new car. thats just a short summary. you can ofcourse check out other threads, there is tons of discussion about these new rolla's and people's likes and dislikes about them. overall its a good car.

Fuel Efficiency depends on the driver...

Case & Point...

You could have the most fuel efficient car on the road, but if you drive it balls to wall, it will suck up more gas than expected. Conservative driving = better fuel efficiency.

Like the video states... a BMW M3 can be more efficient when driving the same speed as the prius, only because the Prius was not meant to be a sports car, so driving it like one will not be efficient. Where as driving a M3 at the same speed as a Prius Maxed out, will prove to be more efficient because it was designed to be a Sports Car, so while the prius was at 6000rpm... the M3 would only be at like 2500 - 3000 rpm...

So... when you think about it, the corolla's are only efficient if you drive them like they were meant to be driven... Slow and Steady with no Jack-Rabbit Starts.

The more you romp it... the more you pay...
the less you romp it... the less you pay.

You won't find a great difference in the fuel consumption between a 2005 and a 2010 Corolla, definately not enough to warrant a purchase based on fuel consumption alone.

If you are looking for new for other reasons, test drive the '10, and see how it sits with you, then test drive it some more, then come back and read some opinons.

i had a 2006 corolla 5 speed. rated 32/41 mpg (adjusted to 28/37 mpg under new testing methods)

i now drive a 2009 corolla 5 speed. rated 26/35 vs 28/37 for the previous generation.

i have driven the same general route with both cars and would say if there is any real mileage advantage, it would go to the 2006, but barely (maybe 1 mpg under some conditions). not statistically significant.

if i had it to do over again, i would have driven the 2006 for many years (simply would have made better sense financially than trading a relatively new car). the 10th gen has some advantages: quieter, a more refined ride, more standard safety features. but, steering is awfully vague on the 10th gen.

I have a 2010 Corolla S with a 5spd. You could visit https://www.fueleconomy.gov/mpg/MPG....ehicleID=26377 To see my stats for gas millage. Seems I am the only 2010 Corolla keeping track right now

I commute right at about 60 miles 1 way. So here is a rough break down of my speeds:
7 Miles = Speeds of about 55-65 (Mostly Steady)
4 Miles = Speeds of about 45-50 (Stop & go)
15 Miles = Speeds of 70-80 (On an Interstate)
20 Miles = Speeds of about 60-75 (Speed up & down to pass)
5 Miles = Speeds of about 40 (Lots of Stops)
8 Miles = Speeds of 45-50 (Stop & Go)
1 Mile = Speeds of 35 (Stop & Go)

& the worse mileage I have gotten was 32 even & 35.4 is my best so far. Its bone stock other then de-badged the trunk. I tend to be a moderate accelerator (I take a little while to get up to speed, but not like granny speed) I also use compression braking when I come to stops & shift right around 2,100 rpms most of the time.

I got about .8 mpg worse with my 2010 than I did with my 2008 overall. The 05 and 08 are essentially the same car. I really wish I had kept my 08 instead of trading it for the 2010, but that had nothing to do with fuel economy.

In my 2010 S automatic where I drive about 90% highway with the cruise set to 75, and 10% 35-40 mph side roads. I have only been getting 33 mpg calculated manually with each fill up.

When I was breaking it in and averaging 65 mph instead of 75 mph, I got a couple of tanks calculated at 38 mpg.

It is amazing how your fuel economy goes south with just a little more speed on the highway.

Yes it does, the EPA & many other company that promote better fuel economy, have done years of studying on this very topic. http://www.edmunds.com/advice/fuelec...8/article.html Is a nice read that did a study on a car, truck & SUV at different speeds & helps bring to light just how much your speed can effect your gas mileage.
Its still odd that with all these modern technology & better running engines, that they have not geared the transmissions to better MPG @ say 70 vs 60-65 range. I know drag from air comes into play, just openly no reason why my 2010 Corolla should be at like 3000rpms & doing 71mph or so... Should have it set for like 2700rpm or just give us a 6th gear / re-work 5th gear.. Its lame how 3rd to 4th gives me dang near 800rpm drop but 4th to 5th sees like a whole 400rpm drop in engine revs

i should add, in spring/summer/fall driving, 39-40+ mpg was easily achievable (with reasonable driving) on mostly highway/light suburban commutes in both my 2006 5 speed and current 2009 5 speed. pushing past 68-70 mph is indeed what will make that much less likely.
