I would love to get some ccfl rings the size of the cupholders and do it with those. Not sure how durable they are though =/

Well I would do a DIY except I connected them to my interior lights.

Do they stick out far enough that they could possibly be damaged or pushed in by a can or wide base cup?

It is possible, but with my current experience no. I've used super glue and with my own hands I was unable to push the lights. They are just small nobs sticking out.
