Not a lot of info to go off, but here are some ideas.

Is it recent change? The smell can be caused by "fuel additives" or ethanol, both of which are typically found in winter blend gasoline.

Mechanically, the best place to look is the catalytic converter, however if it were to have gone bad, the O2 sensor should have picked it up, flagging the CEL.

Other questions would be what kind of fuel mileage are you getting and how often do you smell it (ie full throttle or at idle)

Its normal for the Catalytic converter to make that noise if you're putting the engine under stress like climbing up a hill, moderate acceleration with a loaded car, just straight hard on the throttle acceleration will make the smell.

I had the same issue with my 02 and my 06, same with the 09 although its a little harder since I got the 2.4L

Your not the only one!
I have a 2010 corolla with the rotten egg smell. I switched gas stations brands but the smell is still there. I drive light footed. The smell is strongest after short < 5 mile trips from a cold start.
BTW: I average 31-33 mpg in the city.

It's normal.
Do a search and you'll see that a lot of people have experienced the same thing.

I'm glad that I'm not one of them! I only use Shell or Chevron gas though as they have always been rated very high.

I have used the cheapest gas in many cars and never had a sulfer smell. I think the sulfur smell is sulfer dioxide, which is one of the pollutants the emission control system is supposed to control. I would have the tailpipe emmisions checked by the dealer, as you may have a defective component in the system, which could also mess with your power and fuel economy.

Most of the time, it's caused by unburnt gasoline in the catalytic converter.

It's more noticeable when the engine is under stress on a cold day before it's been warmed up properly.

I have the same problem with my 2010 Corolla S bought in Nov. '09, right from the start with the first free tank of gas from the dealer.

Cold days/short trips are the worst - goes away if I drive 10-20 miles on the highway. Average city MPG is 29.

Been back and forth to the dealer and got the same "change the brand of gas" story since nothing shows up when they check the car (CEL?), which I have done with no improvement. I'll now talk to them about the catalytic converter. I think PhatRoyale is right about the "unburnt gasoline in the catalytic converter" being the problem.

I don't think this is something we should just have to put up with.I saw on the Highlander forum that one owner had Toyota change the catalytic converter for him. Let's see how it goes for me - will keep you guys posted.

HAHAHA

This Happened to me this morning after I stomped on it turning onto Hwy10 in Mississauga to beat the mad rush of people who just got a green light. I let off the gas once I got to 70 and poof, smelly egg fart from my XRS.

If you are going to stomp on it and then let off, enjoy the eggie goodness.

Think of it this way...

If you are smelling eggs while driving, let up a bit on your aggressive accelerating to avoid the smell.

Actually, with me the smell occurs mostly with easy driving around town on cold days (so far that is - have only had the car since November '09).

ehhh.. our batteries does not have enough service for having this problem so does our alternators. Here's what I thought before, what I learned, and still, and will always believe.

Question:
My car's exhaus smells like rotten eggs when I start it up in the morning. Why is that?

Answer:
On some vehicles, a sulfur smell or 'rotten egg' odor may be noticed coming from the exhaust system. The odor
is usually noticed after a cold start, fast idle, extended periods of idling and full throttle acceleration. Sulfur smell
is not an indication of an engine concern and will not cause reduced driveability or durability of the engine or
any of its emission components.
The sulfur smell or 'rotten egg' odor is caused by high amounts of sulfur in the gasoline being used in the vehicle.
Sulfur is normally eliminated during the refining process, but the EPA regulation of sulfur in gasoline differs
from state to state. Vehicles using fuel containing high amounts of sulfur will most likely emit sulfur smell from
the exhaust system.
When high sulfur fuel is burned, there is a chemical reaction in the catalytic converter causing the sulfur to oxidize.
As the vehicle is driven, the oxidizing reaction odor in the converter will decrease with mileage and age.

Replacing the catalytic converter will not eliminate sulfur smell and replacement will just extend the
period of time needed for the converter to 'age' allowing it to reduce sulfur smell to an acceptable
level.
  1. Switch to a different brand of fuel and drive the vehicle for at least 100 miles. Monitor the decrease or
    increase in sulfur smell.
  2. Do not add any type of 'fuel additive' as this could add sulfur to the fuel and cause/increase the odor.
  3. Try to avoid extended periods of short trip driving or aggressive acceleration.
  4. Request information from your local fuel dealers on the amounts of sulfur in their gasoline. Try to use fuel
containing the lowest amounts of sulfur.
  5. Visit the EPA and gasoline company websites to stay informed on any changes in fuel or environmental regulations.
A website to check is: EPA
