Hi all.
I will be taking delivery of a preowned 2009 Corolla tomorrow (11/16/09) with 35.6K miles. I test drove it, took it home overnite, and was totally blown away. This car will be my wife's new daily commuter. She puts on 90 miles a day. This car is super clean and I got a super deal on it as I work for the GM dealership that has it. I have never owned a Toyota before. I am a 47 year old GM guy. I've always owned Chevys and Buicks. I always felt that buying other than GM would be like biteing the hand that feeds me. At least I'm purchasing from my own feeder.
This rig is very nice. Very comfortable with all the right features.
What can I expect for long troublefree ownership?
I realize the comprehensive warranty will be out in another 400 miles but the powertrain warranty is good up to 6/60, so I'm told. I'm not worried as this car is so prestine. I'm likein' it. It's hard to believe it has 36.6k miles. It was put into service in May of 2008', so it is basically a year and a half old.
Any Tips on maintenance?
I perform all my own maintenance and very rarely let anyone touch my vehicles. It even pains me to have to let someone put an inspection sticker on a vehicle. I feel like it gets violated anytime someone touches it.
It looks like this Corolla will only come with one key. How much can I expect to pay for a spare key. It is the style key with the 4 buttons on the key head. From what I gather it is an expensive key and requires special programming. Like a SAAB? I fear I will be at the mercy of a Toyota dealer in this case. Is this true? I would like a service manual for this car. Any thoughts on that?

Welcome to the Toyota family. I'm your age and I've owned Toyotas all my life. I've done the standard maintenance myself and I've never dealt with any major issues on any of my cars. Just the basic replacement items as the miles go up.

Japanese cars, especially Toyotas have no major issues. Just routine maintenance. Wear items like brake shoes, filters, (oil, air and cabin). Pumps,(Water, fuel) when needed. 10 th gen. uses chain for the cams so no attention needed. Just drive, enjoy and save.
Congrats on your 1st Toyota! I bought my first one, in 88, a NEW Corolla.
In 88k miles, all it needed was routine maintance(oil changes), a battery, and a muffler.
Welcome to TN!
Thanks for the info. Very helpful.
About that key. Has anyone purchased one from E bay and if so were the instructions for programming, that the seller is supplying with the key, something I can do without specialized equipment? I would think not, otherwise the system is not that secure. That key is a very good price from what I have seen so far. I know how dealers are when it comes to programming a part that someone purchased elsewhere, if you know what I mean. Any more info on the key situation would be much appreciated.
Got it home tonight. All is well.
It's now only 400 miles to being out of warranty.
Does Toyota have a different warranty for emissions? I know the powertrain is 5 year 60k but what about emmissions?
Sorry if I sound paranoid but I just want to learn as much as I can about my Toyota. I will drive it for a few more days then I will turn it over to my wife so she can hopefully, Not destroy it. She will definitly start racking up the miles and door dings. Seems a shame as the car is so mint.
Right now it has just under 36k and I estimate that in November of 2011', barring no accidents, it will have 92k on the odometer.

I need to take some before and after shots.
If I remember right the emissions warranty is 100k???? The 36k mark is for bumper to bumper and other components have longer coverage. If the car was taken care of you will be fine, historically, Toyotas run forever! I bought my 09 Corolla S a year ago & I just turned over 8k. My miles are spread out as I own 5 Toyotas!
My first Toyota was a 69 Corolla that my grandfather gave me and it went over 400k and still had the original starter & alternator! It was a small 1.1L engine that I really had to plan my passing with but I loved that car until a drunk driver hit me and totaled it.

thats weird that your corolla only came with one key...even though it is preowned...i bought mine new and it came with 2 master keys and 1 spare key...you should wonder who has the other 2 keys...
The car is a one owner and I only got the one key.
My salesman is trying to get the other keys from the previous owner. We all know how that go's. People always lose their freakin' keys. If he doesn't hear from the previous owner by the end of tomorrow then I have the green light to write a purchase order to the Toyota dealer and get another key at no charge to me.
I would still like to know how the key gets programmed. If I go by the description of the ones being sold on E-Bay then it doesn't seem to require a Tech 2 to program it.
Not sure, I havn't spoken to a Toyota dealer yet.
Will wait and see.
