New member. Few question for my GF's corolla

Hello from MBworld and e90post. My girlfriend have a 2009 corolla and she has stock halogen. I want to help her change it out to HID. Is there a DIY guide for it? Would you guys recommend a relay harness also for the low beams?

2009 Corolla low beams are 9006 correct?

Is there any minor mods I can help my GF do while I am at it? I was planning to red out that amber on the rear tail light and change her interior lights.

Yeah here you go...

Read/Watch this first..
Mandatory Viewing Before Considering HID Conversions.

Then Do this...
Toronto: Projector Retrofit?

If you don't do a Projector Retrofit, then I don't suggest putting in HID's... Just my opinion.
I'm looking out for the well being of other drivers.

Why can't I just put a conversion kit on? It is just a corolla don't want to do so much to it. I think just add 4300k HID is all the mods I will do on my GF corolla just for extra visibility.

I know its just a corolla but the Beam pattern of the Xenon Bulb does not work in a Halogen Mirror Housing. You are better off to buy High Powered Halogen Bulbs. It will cost less, and be safer for everyone.

Do what you want, but i'm just giving you the facts, HIDs in Halogen Housings are Illegal, Dangerous, inconsiderate, and Not DOT approved. the proper way to put HIDs into a car is by doing the Projector Retrofit.

However many people just slap some Ballasts and the conversion kit in their car and be done with it. Its up to you bud, your money. I still have Stock Halogens in my XRS and I can see just fine. And I do almost all of my driving at night.

When did HID kit become illegal in the states? I notice you are from Canada. I am from the US. I have been in the car scene for decades. I have not once heard that HID are illegal. I am even running 3000k HID fog light on my 335i with no projectors for 3 years. Never been pulled over for it.

Maybe the laws are different in Canada or Europe compared to the US?

Even if it is not illegal....running HID on stock halogen housing will create glare, it will blind and affect other drivers on the road.

HIDs are not illegal... BUT Xenon bulbs in HALOGEN Housings are illegal.

HIDs in Fogs are the same... you won't get pulled over but you sure as hell will blind others.

The laws are the same in the US as in Canada. People just ignore them. Kinda like Speeding, or drunk driving, or not wearing a seat belt. People will break the law every day, and very few will get caught.

By all means throw the HIDs in her car, its not like I'm going to be driving near her. I'm just giving you some food for thought. Does she really need HIDs? Do the other people on the road really need to be dazed by the glare coming from her headlights? What IF she does get a ticket for them. Is it worth the chance?

Its up to you boss.

I'm not here to argue about a stupid topic. I sure as hell dont need someone to tell me what I can do or can't do with my cars.

Btw, I am getting 4300k phillips HID. Which usually come stock on most cars. I highly doubt a police can even tell the difference between a 4300k with projector or xenon. Unless I put a ricer 6000k or above on it that's a different story.

where is the law anyways? I want to see where it is states in the law that I cannot have HID without projectors in the US.

you won't get a ticket. people are just making sure she isn't blinding others on the roads and getting flashed by anyone who is annoyed. plus if you do a retrofit the hids will be as nice as your stock 335i ones or better. check out what a retrofit is and what the product of one is before you knock it down.

pretty much if you can settle with her having blinding lights like every other civic on the road then go for it.

In his defense someone could have just answered his question already...if he's going to put xenons in a halogen housing then let him do it under his own discretion.

And to the OP yes the Corolla's low beam is 9006.

A lot of people also like changing the interior lights/license plate lights to LEDs which is a fairly quick DIY as well.

I hope I was able to answer a few of your questions.

Sorry if I came across hostile bud, I just hate HID's in Halogen housings.

As for the Tails, a Vinyl overlay will work for redding it out just fine. it holds up pretty good too. Just make sure you head gun that sucker on there good to avoid bubbles & peeling.

another cheap and easy mod is full out blacked out tails/reflectors if she is into that.

De-badging is another cheap and easy one. Just some Goo Gone and fishing line will work.

Painting the Toyota Emblem is another one. There are some DIY's on here for that too.

If you go with HIDs, i'd suggest 35W.

What model Rolla does she have? CE, LE, S, XRS, XLE? depending on the model would depend on the mods.

I think I would do minor mods that is it. Don't want to attract too much attention in the Corolla like how I do in my cars. Everyone car with a fat canister want to race me.

Something small like stock color 4300k HID, red out amber, change interior LED and I will call it a day. I also want to paint match the rear reflector like how I did on my IS350.

Yeah, I will definitely get the 35W. 55W might fry my stock harness. I usually run 35W on all my cars.

She has the S. She isn't into the car scene but I am helping her out since I drive it once in a while to use as a beater.. don't want door dings on my car..
