Just got a XRS

just picked up my 10 XRS (power + jbl packages, thats it). put 28 miles on it tonight. nice car.

does the XRS have auto headlamps? or if you leave the headlamps on will they go off after opening the door (my tacoma does). XRS seemed to not have either feature....? and no, i did not read the manual yet.

the other question is, dealer had to "cap off" the basic alarm system. he said they pop them in on every car that comes off the truck and they try and upsell the item. XRS had a blue light (perhaps a led) flashing under the steering column, but since i did want to pay for that they "capped" it off. anyone know what this is? can it be reactivated?

Congratulations on your new purchase. I also own an XRS and I do believe that every XRS has DRL (Daytime Running Lamps/Lights). My car, if I turn the lights on and turn the vehicle off will alert me when the lights are left on - when I open the door.

However, if you use the DRL and do not turn your lights on, the vehicle will turn off the lights when the ignition is turned off.

I do not know about the basic alarm system, so perhaps someone else will chime in.

Again, congratulations on your new purchase and I hope you really enjoy it.

Jeff Lange may have more to say about this but it sounds like he installed an aftermarket alarm in there and was trying to get more money out of the car. I know my 09 S has the stock alarm and I do not have any flashing blue lights under the dash, mine are underneath the HVAC console.

Grats on the purchase

I know my XRS (a Canadian model) has auto headlights. There is a small dome shaped sensor on the dash near the windshield on the drivers side. If it's dark and as soon as the parking break is disengaged the lights will come on. Also if your driving and the sun sets then the lights will come on after a certain threshold is reached.

the headlamp switch doesnt have a "auto" position on my xrs. as for the alarm, at the dealer i deal with it gets installed to every vehicle after it gets unloaded from the truck (dealer cost is $60 but they upsell it for about $200). its some sort of quick plug-in thing, its not a full alarm like the RS3200 (i think it has audible glass, doors, and bump sensor), and it had a blue light under the dash directly below the steering wheel. not really sure, i picked up my xrs at night and didnt see the guy disable the alarm and cap off light, but i saw the blue light flashing just before i went in to sign papers. weird was he said they "disable" it if you dont want to buy it.

There is no auto setting. If you are driving at night try to turn your lights off and they should stay on regardless. The only way is if someone had disabled the DRL and auto lights which the dealer usually refuses to do because it is considered a safety feature.

as for the alarm thingy, i'll post a pic of whats left under the dash.

The alarm you are talking about should be a karr alarm. I think he meant he took out the motherboard unit when he was talking about capping off. Because many dealerships install their own alarms and add the price onto the vehicle. If you look under, where the led leads to, there should be wires disconnected if thats what he meant by capping it.

i noticed something odd with the rear view mirror. when i flipped it over to dark side i noticed the mirror (or the anti brights coating) was wavey, as in not flat at all. poor quality on the piece. anyone else notice this?

lol...

Man you picking this car apart eh...

Take it to your dealer if it is horrible quality and they will fix it.

Otherwise enjoy the car for what it is. It's a nice car, but it's not a luxury car where it will be above & beyond expectations.

I think the downgrade from your Lexus to a Corolla is getting the best of you.

My son loves his XRS, of course any 16 year old would love a 2010 car for his birthday.

Dead on...

Plus its an XRS, not many 16 yr olds will have one of them.
+1 for being a generous Father.

Thank you....

It was the least I could do...his GPA is 3.96. He is 6th in his class. He really earned it. I am just glad I was able to do something special like that at least 1 time in my life.
