2010 Corolla CE bad fuel economy?

Just bought a new 2010 corolla CE. I drive in the city, and a tank doesnt get me too far. The smart meter tells me my avrage fuel economy is around 9.2L/100km in contrast with the advertised 7.2L/100km. Is there something wrong with my car?

To have a good idea, you need to find your average over the length of an entire tank of fuel. If your only basing this off very short trips, your not getting a very accurate read.

The best route.
1. fill up, record your mileage.
2. run to near empty, fill up again.
3. Determine km ran/liters refueled.

Automatic or manual?

City or highway driving?

If it is auto do you have it in D or 3?

Details kind of make a big difference.

Are you resetting the average MPG meter between each tests?

No, i just left the MPG meter unchanged.

The first tank of gas i got from my dealer when i got the car got me pretty far. Then the second tank of gas appeared to go much quicker, same route into the city, similar traffic etc.

I'm gonna check my tire pressure tomorrow.

If car is brand new and in only city driving 9.2L/100km . 30.1 mpg(imp) is acceptable. Mileage will improve with use.

Colder ambient temperatures will give you lower numbers as well.

If you ever hit -30 and colder you'll see it take a beating....

Also, The digital mpg readout is a bit gratuitous with its calculations- at least compared to the old fashioned way. I should think 30mpg on all city driving is pretty awesome, considering I'm getting between 34-38 on the digital readout for ~80% of 45-55mph driving (quite a few stoplights though)

In the winter, if I am constantly stuck in the rush hour traffic, I get in the 9-10 L /100 km range

On the highway with no traffic, I get the advertised 5.7 to 6.0 L /100km

I get about 6L/100 KM highway and 8L/100 KM city (I drive in Toronto) 50 - 50
Check your tire pressure , go easy on the gas pedal when accelrating and coast to stops and you will see at least 8 L/100 KM in the city
