Why the switch? What are your reasons to justify taking a loss with the trade-in?

I don't mean to be an ass... just want to know so we can help justify the trade in.

The only MAJOR differences I know of (please correct me if I am wrong) is that Matrix has the bigger 2.4L engine in their S trim and it being a hatchback.

Since you are asking for "what YOU would do?", I am going to say what I think about the matrix explicitly. So, I DON'T want any arguments afterwards.

1. I personally think the new matrix looks hideous. I've seen tumors more bearable than matrix's looks.

2. In real conditions matrix's fuel economy with 2.4L engine is much lower than what that engine yields in a camry.

3. I will lose significant amount of money for trading in a 2009 car. The dealer will give me ~$11k and after just washing/waxing my car they will sell it to some idiot who is willing to pay ~$14k.

4. Serial rapists/killers drive hatchbacks/small wagons (recall Ted Bundy and others). Perhaps to carry killing/raping gear.

5. People will most likey assume that I have no friends and I play video games 24/7.

6. I will have to forget about getting any dates because of the reasons #1,4 & 5.

7. And again matrix just looks plain hideous.

if you get the AWD model, then go for it.

Rear Indy Suspension & AWD would be nice.

I am very happy with the corolla, I live in Mahopac NY lots of hills and I realize that no matter if you have 4 wheel drive or AWD your gonna slide on black ice so any way I was really finding hard to get around, so I thought the AWD would help a little

The AWD system in the Matrix is part time and run through a viscous coupling.

+1

If you are having trouble on the ice than get a proper set of winter tires & wheels & you will save yourself a ton of money.

A proper set of winter tires designed for ice & snow with studs will get you around on most paved roads & allow you to stop with either a FWD, 4WD or AWD.

Actually, Corolla and Matrix are one of the few cars that you could trade in and not lose your shirt. If you've had it 18-24 months you should almost break even. The Canadian Black Book here shows an 09 Corolla Ce averaging about $13500 Canadian funds. It works out to about the same as a lease payment for those 2 years. You will lose a little but not like a focus or a cobalt that are worth about half the original value.
