There is no meaning behind them.

It's merely a model designation used to describe the trim level.

I'm not sure what XLE or XRS mean but as far as I understand Canadian Corollas are termed as follows.

CE - Classic Edition
LE - Luxury Edition
S - Sport

Canada

Traditionally RS stood for Rally Sport. XRS however seems to be singularly a Toyota Corolla designation.

The Canadian trim level make the most sense as far as acronyms go.

Rally Sport...

So the Yaris RS is a rally sport car...

those terms don't apply to Toyota Cars.
Not since the GT-S era

CE - Cheap Edition
LE - Lame Edition
XLE - Extra Lame Edition
S - Slow
XRS - eXtra Rear Spoiler

That may be true but that is where the letters originate from, wether it holds true today is another story. I still don't know why people act like the 1.8 is so slow. It's not supposed to be a sports car & as I can keep up with any traffic I've encountered, I've never felt it's underpowered. Most economy cars that I know of don't go 0-60 in 6 seconds! lol

My point is that is isn't really slow. When I need to get up and go it does just fine. I've owned many cars that were much slower than my 09 Corolla S. There used to be V8's that put out similar power to our Corolla's, now those were slow when they would go 0-60 in 13 seconds! When I can get there in under 9 seconds who cares???? Is 2 seconds going to make a difference in your commute to work? Maybe at the drag strip it will, but that's not what the Corolla is made for; so for all of those that keep complaining that the car is too slow either buy a faster car or stop complaining or even mentioning it!

I think it goes back to the 2003 Matrix. They had the base, XR and XRS grades. I don't know what XR means, but XRS was better. When they upgraded the Corolla to the same engine, etc, they also gave it the XRS designation.

I honestly don't know what it means, but probably not much, if anything.

Even designations that originally DID have a meaning (like SR5 - Sport Runabout 5-speed) eventually ended up meaningless.
