2010 Toyota Corolla S Defogger Problem?

Just bought a new 2010 Toyota Corolla S a couple of weeks ago. On its test run, the rear defogger worked just fine. Had the opportunity to use it this morning and realized the top five bars weren't defogging anything. Does anyone else have this problem? Or is this a known problem? Thanks!

Mine works fine but you need to take your Corolla by the dealer because something's not right.

Top few bars are the radio's antenna (sp).

on my 09 corolla S those rear defoggers works fine and takes only a few seconds to clear it all up. your dealer should be able to help you out with that.

@cabur Looking into that right now. Thanks for the tip! It's looking like that the top five bars are part of the antenna window grid? Will call Toyota in the morning to confirm.

@flamedrgn Everything below the top 5 bars (window grid) works like a charm. Only takes a minute or two to defrost all condensation. Though, I noticed the grid pattern for the top 5 bars is both different (in pattern) and separated from the bars below.

What they said is correct, and it looks like you've confirmed. This is the radio antenna. The antenna on the roof is for satellite if you add it. All other radio gets picked up from the rear glass.

Rear defogger issues

@Jeff Thanks for the kind words of encouragement! But it's still strange to me that it would work that way. Please look at the photos below I took of the defogger in action this morning.

First off, what is the elapsed time between the first photo and the last one?

The defroster is on a timer, which should allow sufficient time to ensure the heat makes its way across the entire glass surface, even into the radio antenna lines. Also one must make sure that the forced air defrost at the front is on to remove humidity the cabin. Coupled together you should be able to defrost all your windows even at -40F, provided that the cars coolant reaches operating temperature, and given sufficient time.

If it can't, the defrost element may be weak, and need replacing.

The elapsed time between the first and last photo was 10 minutes (on my drive to work). The defroster was on for about 15 minutes before turning itself off. I also had the forced air defrost on as well for about 20 minutes. When I arrived at work, I took an exterior photo (just in case Toyota wasn't able to replicate the problem).

Speaking of Toyota, I emailed the Customer Care Center about the defogger problem with photos. They replied saying they can't receive attachments! What kind of customer service is that and what age do they think we're living in? The person I spoke to was rude and said they can't diagnose something like this over the phone. Decided to call later in the day and a different Customer Service Rep sought out a mechanic. The mechanic said it's common in the 2010 Corollas to not defog the upper 20% of the rear window. The remaining 80% will defog as normal.

Guess I should take the car in for service? Does anyone else have a 2010 Corolla? Thoughts?

Depending on ambient air temperature and humidity, as well as HVAC settings, you may or may not get complete defogging before the timer runs out. I have had it end before completely clearing the glass many times, especially during the winter.

As far as the pictures, they look normal to me.

It doesn't hurt to have Toyota take a quick peak at it, but don't expect anything other than them telling you it's normal, and because of that, they may (depends on dealer) charge you for the time, as it is not a warranted problem with the car.

Might want to wait until your next scheduled service, as you can just get them to take a look while they're doing the other service.

thats normal, mine does the same thing. like others have said the top lines are for the radio and do not heat up to melt ice so the end result is what you see in the pics.
