The misses wants an auto but my main concern is the performance loss compared to a manual (if there even is any).
So if I do go automatic (XRS 5Speed auto) will I suffer a performance impact because of it?

Not enough that you will notice it.
The only thing you will notice is that you aren't shifting / controlling the car like you used to on a Stick. You may feel like you have "lost performance", but really you didn't, you just aren't shifting the gears which may feel like less performance.
if you love to shift gears get a manual. But if you can live without it then please the Mrs.
Depends on the transmission gear, In the case of the rolla I think you will loose performance.
I have drive the 1.8 rolla on Auto and Manual and the is a difference.
The Corolla isn't exactly a Track Car. for a daily commuter both models will work just fine.
Plenty of get up on both tranny's.
The 2.4L XRS is a lot different than the 1.8L models.
I drove both manual & auto in the XRS and the performance difference is minimal.
Like I said before, a Manual will always outperform a Auto, but that is because the driver controls the car and not the Economically tuned ECU.

1.8L auto = 4 gears (compared to 5 for manual)
2.4L auto = 5 gears (compared to 5 for manual)
With XRS, you do not lose a gear for going with auto tranny. Amount of power lost through auto tranny is very insignificant.
Keep in mind, not just the shifting along, manual has less drivetrain loss than auto, since the auto on the corolla is normal auto tranny that runs on torque converter, not a twin clutch or DSG. So in terms of performance, manual on a corolla is better~!

+1 Good point.
Manuals are normally 15-20% loss...
Automatics are normally 20-30% loss...
(Not exact numbers, but a rough estimate)
i was disappointed enough with the xrs automatic that i just decided to go with the 1.8 manual and have the added benefit of the better mpg's and lower price.
the xrs auto feels about how you would expect a 3000 lb car with 154 hp to feel.
On the XRS isn't there +/- shifter mode? I don't know the special term for it but a lot of new cars have it lately. So I don't think going with an auto for the xrs would be too bad, idk lol.
