car shaking excessively?

ok so the weirdest thing happened to my car. ill start by saying i used the car alot all weekend and it was fine. on monday, i get into my car and head to work. once i hit 80-90 km/h, the car started shaking excessively. it happened again on tuesday. at this point i think maybe theres something wrong with the tires, so i decided i would bring it to toyota on the weekend. then out of no where, wednesday the shaking was gone! what could this have been?

Snow or Ice build-up on the inner face of the rims.

I concur with the above poster. In fact, this happened to me last winter. I use winter tires with steel wheels and plastic hubcaps, and one night I had to venture home in some deep snow. Later that week during commuting, I noticed my car would shake so violently that my teeth would rattle if my mouth was open.

Since my car is comparatively low to the ground and the steel wheels prevented me from looking inside like I would have been able to do with my stock wheels, I was not able to remove the snow/ice buildup inside the wheels, but I could vaguely see that some was there. I took it to the dealer and they removed the back wheels and cleaned it up for me. Night and day difference.

My lesson learned: ground clearance is still a big factor in driving in snow , even if your car seems able to plow through it.

It's winter this happens often enough. Just snow/ice build up in the rim.

Use a stick or blast it out with the hose at the car wash.

It is really BAD to drive your car shaking that way. The tie rod ends and ball joints are not meant to be getting hammered constantly. Driving with everything shaking like that is the equivelant of driving hundreds of miles. Always keep your wheels clean.

Than either heat the garage or uses a portable heater next to each wheel for a few minutes just to melt the snow & ice every night! You just have to think outside of the box.
