Look at what I did all by myself!
This happened a few weeks ago, but I was too lazy to upload the pictures
I got my corolla on December 31, 2009, new years eve...
This winter there wasn't a lot of snow (in Toronto).. so I waited to put my winter tires on...
a week after I had my car, my dad made me put the winter tires on
so there I was, sitting in my garage, tightening up the first wheel (driver side rear) and 3 out of the 5 bolts came right off, like they were made from jello.
I thought maybe it was my fault, I tightened them too tight...
I hoped into my other corolla (9th gen) and drove to the toyota dealership I purchased the car from and explained what had happened. They said there was no way i could have twisted them off with my own strength, unless I was jumping on the wrench to tighten them.
Anyways, they gave me new ones, so I drove home quickly to replace them.
After I put the new ones in, I moved onto the next wheel (driver side front), and wouldn't you know it, the first bolt I tightened does the same thing.
So I drove it to the toyota dealership and made them change all of them.
maybe I got a bad batch?
here's what I'm talking about

Too brittle or too hard, maybe? Did they charge to you change all of them, or did they not complain ?
By the look of the last picture, it seems like the studs suffered from impacts, fatigue would explain why it broke easily. This can occur when the nuts are not torqued to specs.

they didnt charge me cuz ive been going to that toyota dealership for long time.. (got my 92 previa there and a bunch of other cars in between)

But seriously, I would think something was wrong with them unless you are using a large breaker bar or something similar to tighten the lugs. Use a torque wrench & tighten to 76' lbs. Did the dealer break any more? If not than I would think you were doing something wrong.

i was using a brand new, calibrated, torque wrench... and i didnt go past 80lbs
the dealer didnt break anymore
i guess the extra 4lbs makes a differnece?

I've only tightened mine to about 80 lbs too. Have about 16,000 miles on mine, no stud problems. (Rotate tires every 5,000 miles)
Some people recommend re-torquing your wheel nuts about 50 or so miles after reinstallation (tire change/wheel reinstallation)

I wouldn't think that 4'lbs would make a difference so there must have just been a handful of defective studs, very weird.

I agree with you, I've always torqued mine to 80ft/lbs with no problems (94 Tercel, 2000 Sienna, 03 Corolla, 05 Highlander and 09 Corolla). I've seen them snap in the 95-100 ft/lb range but that would be normal. It's better for the stud to break instead of the other components taking the extra load.
NO NO NO No!!! looking at the last picture and from my last experience with the 97 camry... the way you tightening bolt is not right. I believe the angle that you tightening the bolt is either too high or too low, and that cause the bolt to break... I used to step on the wrench (stupid me!!!) and the way the bolt break was exactly the same as your...
lol, dont try and stop a run-away train just yet! stud bolts will break very easily. i have broken several over the years, simply a result of an over torque prior to you touching them. impact guns are notorious for cracking studs, i keep a full assortment of wheel studs on hand i my garage at home
