Ok, I've been (and currently am) deployed for 4 months, so deal with me a little here...
As I remember, there is a little hump in the floor under my gas pedal.
Did they get rid of this in the '10's? Do you guys with automatic transmissions have these?
What purpose does it serve?
I had to get aftermarket floor matts which extend over this hump.. plus, the carpet that that was covering it looked to me to show signs of wear. I
On a side note: I wouldn't have had to get aftermarket floor matts if the stock, $100, Toyota carpet floor matts weren't garbage, but, as I'm finding out, Toyota quality doesn't seem to be all it's talked up to be! (Also evidenced by the easily chipped paint on my hood)

IMO. It acts as a STOP (a landing point) for the the gas pedal when fully depressed.
However, the carpet of the landing point will be worn as an consequence.
There is no hump on my 2010 Corolla CE Auto. But the gas pedal will touch the carpet and wear out the carpet if the pedal is fully depressed.
The carpet will be worn as an consequence in time. There is a great danger if the carpet is worn out because the gas pedal may be stuck by the worn carpet. Then WOT will occur.
What I have done on my Corolla to prevent this:-
A metal coin (size of one or two dollar coin) is glued on the landing point of the carpet. The gas pedal will land on the coin when fully depressed and will not cut into the carpet.

Every car I've owned has this issue & the carpet has never worn out, EVER, even after 400k miles.

I think that you don't have a heavy foot to floor (fully depress) the gas pedal in daily driving. Then the carpet will not wear out.
So far, I have never floored my gas pedal on my less than "3000Km" Corolla.
Does your gas pedal land on the carpet floor when fully depress?
In every car I've owned I can see where the pedal touches the carpet, but why would you need to floor the gas with so much regularity? In most DD it's just not needed but even so I can't see the pedal cutting through the carpet. Auto carpet is dense & tough & can't tear or cut easily.

I find that the edge at the tip of my CTS pedal is very sharp and it seems they did not round off the edge during manufacture. The edge is so sharp that it could hurt your finger if not careful. So it could cut into the carpet if some one floors it regularly.
That is why I glued a metal coin at a STOP for my pedal.
I did check the pedal of my friend's 2010 Sienna. His Sienna uses Denso pedal and its edge is quiet smooth.

I checked all 5 of my Toyota's & none of the pedals have a sharp edge, they are all smooth.
