I have a 2009 xle - purchased May 2008 & have 17K miles. (Also have Toyota ext. warranty)
On last oil change/15K service - dealership kept pushing the Fuel Induction System Clean-up ($125.00 us)
I asked to put it off a few months. They said had to be done & thats why my mpg has fallen slightly (as opposed to the cold weather). I still havent had it done.
Is this an important maint thing? According to the warranty info, nothing says it should be done.
What are everyone's opinions on this?

15k cost me $170 & 30K maint almost $300
I am going to have to call BS on this 'service' at this mileage. Looks like the dealer wants some easy money. If you are concerned, go buy some Techron, its one of the best out there.

to me it sounds like they want to a Throttle Body Clean & Fuel Injector Clean...
I suggest using a Fuel System Cleaner like
STP's Complete Fuel System Cleaner... it costs $13 or less, and can be found at Wal-Mart, Target, Canadian Tire, just about anywhere.
Have a ? for you Leanburn - how is your milage so good? Is it flat in your area? I was getting b/t 34-35mpg (figured manually 50/50 driving) last summer now around 32 mpg. I go 55-60 on hwy, accelerate slowly, coast to stop light etc... Granted, it has been a really cold winter for us but I havent changed my driving (well, heater on #2) Plus, I dont 'warm up' car in morning - just start & go
My commute is 95% highway, relatively flat land except for 2 hills.
- I 'drive with load' (gently accelerate before the hill and let it take my excess speed, then gently accelerate back up to cruising speed) after the hills,
- I 'drive without brakes' (coast as much as possible to avoid using the brakes).
- I also pull away from stop as gently as possible (2000rpm is my ceiling).
- Never warm up the car sitting there I tool down the street below 1500rpm and then gently get up to cruising speed, (I use block heater 10 degrees below freezing 3 hours prior to leaving). My car rarely sees over 2500rpm.
- I let the car reach operatiing temperature before turning on the heat defrost and at highway speed I use defrost (front and rear) as needed, I have a heated car seat cover.
I do all these out of habit on all my vehicles and can/and have beat EPA on every vehicle I have driven.

If it is cold winter like recently in VA, then 32mpg in cold winter is reasonable when compared to 34/35mpg in summer.

I call BS on it. At your mileage the system should still be in good shape. Just use high quality gasoline with a good fuel additive package like Shell or Chevron. If you ever need a good fuel system cleaner there is nothing better than BG 44K. It is a little more money at $20 but I've heard about dealers putting in a can & charging you the $125! If you used a can every 10k after maybe 25k miles on your car your fuel system would always be in top running condition.

I use fuel system cleaner every 5K before the oil change, around $10 per bottle. My friend use $3 bottle Lucas injector cleaner every month for his over 300K 15 years old accord. His mechanic said his injector was very clean.
It's my humble opinion that the level of system cleaning is directly proportional to your driving habits.
I try to run my car down to between 1/8 and 1/4 of a tank. Then fill it up completely from a Company that has an additive package that is recognized by most manufactuers. http://www.quiktrip.com/gasoline/iq.asp
A tank of gas very rarely last more than a couple of days because I am a salesman and do a lot of highway driving. I change my fuel filters every 35K.
Never had a fuel related problem with any injector system.
