Is it normal?

Hi all,
While I was driving my 2010 corolla ce, I pulled driver side rear window all the way down. I was driving at about 65-70 km/h. I've heard a terrible noise in cabin.
Does anybody experienced the same noise?
Thanx

Was the front window down also?

If not, its going to make a horrible sound since the air is being pulled out, created almost a low pressure in the cabin, then rushing back in, only to go back out again.

It would happen in any car.

What you're getting is a wind buffeting that is typical of any vehicle. If you turn on your vents to a high setting or better yet open other windows the noise will be reduced or go away completely. I had an Acura Legend once that roared and thumped so loudly it seemed like the car would shake apart.

I made a thread about this a while back.

I made the mistake of rolling both back windows down.

A vortex was created and the gates of hell opened. I got the windows back up before anything escaped.

Or did I?

I really really think you are joking.

On Earth we have air and thus atmosphere which happen to have some pressure (thus planes can fly on earth and not in space) so unfortunately you will have to live w/ that problem.

lol Physics is FUN!

Perhaps your car is traveling so fast that a shock wave is being created at the leading edge of the side mirrors and the shock wave is impacting the door resulting in a split shock wave entering the cabin and deflecting all over the place while creating regions of high and low pressure... better be careful or your car could explode...or implode...or end up in another dimension...

but seriously, it's normal. Try cracking the window on the other side of the car and that should help.

I do this intentionally on occasion (Especially if I find myself with annoying passengers).

I will often then pretend I don't hear it and have no clue what they are talking about!

I have had a lot of cars in my 49 years and 10 months.

I have never had a car that made the sounds my 2009 S does with both back windows down.

No comparison.

The Corolla is worse than some cars, but on par with most modern cars.

This is why I like this forum... and have experienced this yesterday for the first time when the kids rolled them down on the highway!!!

I used to do a lot of stage work for bands and currently shoot display fireworks and this noise certainly has those beat

My 09 Corolla is in the runnings with my moms 08 Accord. They both make a horrendous noise at certain speeds... it's the speed combined with the geometry of the vehicle and the windows that causes the air pressure fluctuations. It's pretty cool physics wise.,. Annoying to your ears tho! I wouldn't recommend driving like that.
