The site below explains how Electric Power Steering (EPS) systems work and how to make modifications to a Toyota EPS to get greater steering feel. I either just found it chasing some other topics, or maybe I saw it in a forum. Either way I don't remember seeing anything like this on this forum. I hope it is interesting and usefull.

Thanks. Great find.
It's comforting to know it's simple enough to change steering effort and feel.
Will wait to see how Toyota handle this steering recall if there's going to be one.

Yeah I posted that in the other thread concerning the eps. There's a lot of good information regarding eps as well as tbs (throttle by wire) on that site. It's a good read. If anyone does it post some results
I could have sworn this was posted before... Or inserted into one of the other threads about the steering on the GenTen.
Could be, I got the reference somewhere. For my interests, I collect references to sites and threads on an Excel spreadsheet. I was recategorizing topics and I got to this site and topic. I thought it is particularly relevant now since there are rumblings about a steering fix recall, and so many people want their steering to have more road feel. Since it is steering (a safety item), if I were interested I think I would find a professional mechanic, give him or her a copy of the article, and see if they could do the mod for a reasonable cost. I would wait to see if it is recalled first though.
Oh, my apologies to anyone who previously posted this information - I wasn't trying to take credit for anyone's previous find. I was just bringing the topic up at this time up due to current interests in EPS related to possible recall on the steering system and many peoples' desire for more road feel in the steering.
I've never heard of a multi-turn pot that they refer to in the article. At any rate, I would like to do this mod someday, but would rather use fixed-value resistors as opposed to variable. This definitely sounds like a worthwhile mod to look into.
It is good to have a better understanding of the EPS.
But I do not recommend any amateur to play around this mod on EPS at all.
It may void your warranty.
I'm kinda figure if toyota does do something in terms of a recall it would be very similar to this mod (though instead of using pots, they use resistors). That would be a cheap, but effective "repair" for toyota. Win-win.

Not sure of Toyota's win-win. The cost of the cheap 2 resisters is now plus 1 hour shop time at least plus customers trust and displeasure.
IMO. Toyota needs only to reflash the ECU of the EPS to achieve this (to further reduce the electric power assistance at moderate and high speed).
Yeah that would work to. I would like to do this mod with the pots just so I can adjust the steering to whatever I want. Sadly I can't since my brother gets my car whenever I graduate college. If I don't like the eps on my next car, thats a different story HEHE

I think that it is a good idea if Toyota could provide a different level of power assist with an user selector (say Full, 3/4, 1/2 , 1/4, None).
