I really hope this isn't the next recall for Toyota, Broken Side Mirrors

This past week both the mirrors fell off on my dad's Corolla.

Initially the passenger side fell off. Then a few days later he tells me that the driver side was shaking quite a bit on the drive to work. I checked it out, and same thing over there. It was barely seated, and came right off.

Haven't been able to take the car in yet, since the dealership is swamped doing the recalls.

We have owned 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th gens Corollas before, and this will be the first time ever one of our Corollas will be going in to the dealership for something other than routine maintenance. I really hope the dealer doesn't try to blame us for this.

Here are the pics

i think there is a better chance that people walked into them causing them to crack internally and eventually fall off. More than likely coincidence. I have yet to see a 10th gen corolla with side mirrors falling off without damage.

I agree with ej063090...

I fold mine in/out constantly for nearly 2 years (fuel economy experiments), and have never had that problem...even at -35C

I'm not disagreeing with what you guys are saying, and really hope it's not a built quality issue. It's just very strange that both the mirrors had the exact same issue, the plastic fatigue is in the exact same spot on both sides. Furthermore, it happened days apart, the first he noticed on Tuesday morning in the garage and other on the drive to work on Thursday.

Usually if someone walks by the mirror and hits it, the mirror just folds in or out. Until the second mirror fell, I too strongly believed that someone probably walked by the car too close.

Also my dad's Corolla sees VERY limited action, 99% of the driving is to and from the office, and it is always parked in the last or 2nd last spot, both of which are reserved spots, in a very low volume area, and no one walks between the cars there. At home it's parked in the garage, and this happened mid week last week.

Oh well, for now I used thick heavy duty ties to hold the mirrors in place, and I'm quite doubtful that the dealer will cover this. If it's not covered, I'll look into replacing the mirrors down the road when the lease is up.

I wonder if it was in fact due to someone walking by or something along those lines, I've never seen something like this.

+1
I've never seen or heard of this ever happening from anyone else so I would also believe that somebody is messing with the car. I would think that it would need to be an insurance claim more than anything else.
