In need of honest answer here guys..ref to my purchase
Ok, I have been on these forums since the end of last year and I feel this is a great community and will give me their honest and flame proof opinions on this subject. Since the end of last year I have wanted a blue corolla xrs. So, I went to my dealer (here in FL) in the begining of Jan. and of course not a single xrs. They told me I could order one with everything I wanted. So, with 0.9 interest rate, I ordered one with $1000 for them to make the order. Here we are in March, recall after recall, and I have a production date for the end of this month. Well while I was waiting I had the opportunity to test drive the lancer gts..and I loved it. So now I am in the pickle with everything going on with Toyota (some of it BS in my opinion) do I go with the lancer with al lthe options which acutally comes out $500 cheaper than the xrs? or do I wait. AND would I be able to get my 1000 back if I go with the lancer. Please dont flame me here guys just looking for honest opinions. You guys are the best. thx for all responses

Both cars are really close in spec on paper! I really like the look of the new lancer as well! The warranty on the lancer is better than the Xrs with 10 years/100000kms! But with my personally opinion, I will still go for the Xrs for reliability and resale value! But the new lancer has improved alot from the previous gen!
Just my 2 cents, if it is not an Evo or the SST equipped lancer ralliart,, I won't buy anything from them in their current lineup!
I work with someone who has a 2008 and although she likes the car, the paint quality is very poor. She's an easy driver and so forth and the bumper and hood is full of chips. I've heard of other complaints about Mitsubishi paint problems as well. I don't really know if Toyota is much better but when I look at that car it would turn me off owning one. Something to consider.

+1. Mitsub has proven unreliability forever so I would choose the xrs. I would probably try a civic if I was in you shoes most cars in that class aren't the most impressive. Hyundai nakes a good car now but a four foor sporty car is not in their repitoure. Try a mazda 3 sport or even a suburu. I would try more cars if your lookin other than toyota. I work for toyota otherwise I probably would have tried other cars. I had a bad exp with vw but they are good cars.

Before u make any decision, go test drive all the cars that interest you and feel them yourself! One thing to keep in mind, if you are looking for a sporty sedan, the Xrs is not the one you should go for! If you are looking for a practical compact 4 doors sedan for day to day driving and a little more power to pass cars on the highway, the Xrs is great for the money!
For quick sporty sedan that will not broke the bank: golf gti (the new one is awesome) mazdaspeed 3, Subaru wrx, civic si, Nissan sentra se-r spec v, cobalt ss!
I also work for Toyota, so my personal opinion is always swayed in that direction. But aside from that, I think the Lancer is a great looking car. I know very little of their reliability and quality track record though.
Assuming whether or not you could get your $1000 deposit back may tend to sway your decision
There's a reason they collect that, but read the fine print in your contract to see if you have an "out", or are subject to losing it if you don't follow through.
Here's another thing to consider (unless you're paying cash): 99.9% of the time, special finance rates are only for "in-stock" purchases. It would feel pretty crappy to sign up for a loan with interest when others are driving off the lot for 0%. I wouldn't take your dealer's word for this, either. They may tell you that you will get the 0% financing, but when you go to sign the papers it will be a different story.
You may want to rethink your strategy, and do the math. If you can widen your search to find an XRS at a dealer, you may save more in financing than the $1000 deposit you may walk away from.
I drive an XRS, and if you can get a Lancer GTS equipped with all the available major options for LESS than an XRS, go for it. It has nice options that the Corolla can't have (Navigation w/Bluetooth, HIDs). I believe it has better handling, so it's probably more exhilarating to drive. Plenty of choices here, so you can't go wrong with any of them.

I'll say it right up front, I'm a Toyota believer & I've always had great luck with them. The new Lancer is good looking but the history of the Mits line has always been poor & resale is even worse. I love my "S" & I feel that it has plenty of power for a DD & I've never had an issue passing anyone when I need to either. If you stick with the "XRS" you will have even more passing power. If you can get your deposit back than do what you want too, but I would stay with the Corolla & I'll bet you have now problems with it. Plus you may be able to work in the free maintenance deal for 2 years because of the delay.

Surely when dealer could'nt deliver on date as promised will be a out so he can have his deposit back.
Have you read the Mits Lancer forum to see what they have to say?
Easy, go with the Toyota, even with their problems. There is no guarantee that Mitsubishi will stay in the US much longer. If they decide to pull out, you'll have a car that you paid too much for and would lose your shirt on the resale.
When I was looking and test driving here was my short list: Corolla S, Civic, Mazda 3 and the Lancer. After the test drives, dropped the Lancer and Civic. It was neck and neck w/ the 3 and Corolla. I decided on the Corolla and at the last minute got the XRS. Got it summer of 08, no remorse, still luv the little kick-ass 5 spd! I think all 4 would make a great car...depending on one's individual tastes. Don't fall for the recall hype, its overblown media and Washington BS! Unless you want to bail out the Bailout....in that case buy the GM or Dodge. A blue XRS is kick-ass!

I'm more interested in what kind of dealer would demand you pay $1000 and then not deliver anything for 3 months.
Was this in writing? If so surely there is a time limit on your agreement, and how to back out of the agreement.
Personally I would have told them to get the car you want and call you, or pack sand.
