As I mentioned in one of my hot threads, I actually like the EPS. Recently I purchased new tires, and I noticed a huge difference in steering performance. I am not sure if the brand of tires have anything to do with it, but the tire pressure does. I my old tires I only had about 35psi and noticed no wandering on the freeway, and I actually had to put some strength into the steering wheel when turning or making a U-turn.
Now my tires are at about 38psi and while driving on the freeway I had trouble keeping the car straight. I little move of the steering wheel put my into another lane. I think the tire pressure has a lot to do with the steering, you guys might want to look into that. Put your tires up to 38-40psi and go 65mph.
So I still like the EPS, but I have to run my tires at lower pressure which I don't want to do.
P.S I think the guys at the tire shop tighten my rear wheels too tight and its causing drag on my drums. Is that even possible?
personally i think its also got a lot to do with what tires you are running and under what conditions. I have absolutely no complaints about the steering in summer, but in winter with the winter tires on it is terrible, light snow/wind on the road throws off my car. it is not stable at all, specially at high speeds. tire pressure has been maintained at 30 psi thruout winter, so not sure if my alignment might be off ?? i am also thinking to sell my x-ice tires and try blizzaks next winter.
If you run your tire pressure as high as you do you will notice the car wandering like you do. Try lowering you psi to 32 & see what difference you notice. I run 35 psi on my summer 225/45R17 tires & I have no issues with wandering. The wider tires also handle & feel much better than my stock 205/55R16 tires.

What size winter tires are you running? I use Yokohama W-drive 215/45R17 & they feel great. They handle very much like my summer tires. I've experimented running them between 32-35 psi with little noticeable difference. On my other cars I use Bridgestone Blizzack tires & I love them, 205/55R16 on my 07 Matrix XR & 185/65R14 on my 94 Corolla DX. Between the Blizzack's & W-drive winter tires I would rate them about the same.

they are michillin X-ice 205/55R16 and they are absolutely useless on ice as per my experience this winter. they are good for plowing through deep snow, but if there's ice on the road or a light coat of snow there is a lot of slippage/wheel spin, and that slippage accompanied by my car wandering left and right makes me hate driving it in winter.
so does that relate directly to my car wandering left/right? if so, i am going to sell those tires/steel rims and get 17' blizzacks mounted on my stock wheels for next winter.

I've used mine in cold rain, ice, light snow & heavier snow. I've had good luck with all conditions & with my traction control on my 09 Corolla it will go any where I want it too.

well since I live in California I just have to stick with one type of tire. I do however have 195/65R15 and they are at 38psi. Someone mentioned that Toyota recommends 32psi is that for any tire brand? The once I have now are rated to 44psi, and I am afraid if I run them at 32 they will wear out faster.

If you run them at 38 psi you will wear them out faster, just the middle will wear quicker if overinflated. The outer edges will wear faster if the tire is underinflated. I would stay in the 32-35 psi range. The taller 195/65R15 tires will feel less responsive than a lower profile 215/45R17. I have your size on my older 94 Corolla & it wanders much more with the 185/65R14 tires on it vs. when I put on the 195/55R15 or 205/45R16 tires that I have for it.

The maximum pressure on the side of the tire has nothing to do with how much pressure you should be running in it.
RussianBadBoyLB, What brand tire did you buy that you are running at 38psi? If the tire shop over torqued you lugnuts evenly, then probably everything is fine, but it one or two are over torqued, then they can warp your drums. I doubt you would hear a dragging (is this something your hear or feel). Any reputable shop will use a torque wrench or color coded torque extenders on their air tools to prevent this.
38psi is way too much for your tires. try 32psi. 44psi the max the tire can hold, dont be fooled by the number on the sidewall, you shouldnt go anywhere close to the max air pressure.

Hmmmm your old set of tires were at 35psi, and the new set are at 38psi and giving you undesirable results. Why not try it at the same psi you had success with before, then move down to 32psi as mentioned if needed?
