You're NOT going to believe this. 2-3MPG from Royal Purple.
I don't believe it either, so Friday I changed my oil from factory fill to RP 5W-20 at 4700 miles. After the change, I reset the mileage calc in the car. I usually watch it very carefully... and I know, for example that going home from work is down hill so I'll get a bit better mpg and dropping off kid nets worse mpg because of traffic around school. But anyways... I KNOW that 24-36 hours after a reset I'll be 26-28 mpg with my usual 90% city driving. So today I drove to the office like normal, 3-4 red lights... and pull up at the office at 30.8mpg avg. for the last 50 miles since Friday and the change.
I've never been able to maintain 30+ in city driving for more than 5-10 miles of driving up to this point.
I'm sure that RP is better than stock but I would just watch your ave MPG over the next few weeks to get a better idea. I get 32+ in city driving with my Corolla using 0W-20 Mobil 1.

i dont believe it. lol. jk! maybe its just my car, but im normally a few miles per gallon off from what the dash says. calculate it after you fill it back up and let us know the results!

yeah, my computer is off, too... but I'm just comparing computer to computer data... and it's definitely higher.
Your sample of mileage is pretty small to really say for sure what caused your gain. While I am sure RP is fine, I doubt it was the main reason you saw a 8-10% mpg gain.

only other difference... we're in the high 70's now... but I thought cool air was more dense and gave better power/efficiency?
1) Your car engine drivetrain is still breaking in, you are going to see your numbers increase up to near 10,000 miles, then it will level off.
2) Warmer weather is arriving, with it increased fuel economy. A couple of degrees can make a difference either way.
3) As stated, your sample is too small. A couple of extra pounds in the trunk or not, wind changing direction, traffic patterns, tire pressure, which can fluctuate with temperature, driver mood, all affect fuel consumption. Unless you have a controlled environment you can't simply pin a change in consumption on one variable, especially oil.
4) 5w20 dino or synthetic, is going to perform the relatively the same at operating temperatures, and the 5w20 synth and dino are so close to each other (spec-wise) that you are not going to notice any difference in fuel consumption. You probably would notice any difference if you moved to a 5w30 oil either. The only area where synthetic shines over dino is temperature extremes hot/cold, otherwise the specs are nearly indistinguishable unless you know what you are looking for. You definately would not notice any difference between 2 different synthetic oils, RP is good oil, but unless you are wringing every drop of HP from your engine and have done testing on each, there is no performance advantage over Pennzoil Platinum, Mobil1, Redline or any other synthetic oil out there when driving for fuel economy.
5) the dash display can be anywhere from 'pretty close' to 'out to lunch' as far as accuracy goes. A well kept spreadsheet is the only way of getting closer to true numbers.

I know after my last fill-up I recorded it in my iPhone app and I am currently averaging 28.1 mpg. It has gone up with every fill-up since using the app on my phone. I have only 4 fill-ups so far logged into the app.
