Question After market Fogs and Factory Harness

Ok, I got my after market fogs installed, but not wired. As I was mounting the lights I noticed the plugs for the factory fogs were available. I was wondering if I would just have to order the headlamp switch with fogs in order to utilize the factory harness. I can get the switch for like $86 +shipping. What's funny is the switch without the fogs is more expensive for some reason. Has anyone done this? How hard is it to replace the headlamp switch in the steering column? Any help is appreciated.

You'll also require a Fog Light RELAY. Replacing the switch should be quite easy. Just remove the trim around the steering column and if the head-light switch is similar to a Highlander's (did the same mod on a 05 Highlander) then no tools are required.

You will need to remove the steering wheel in order to change the switch on the 10th Gen Corolla.

If all the factory wiring is there, sienna1 is correct, you will need the switch and the fog light relay.

Maybe I should just use the wire harness that came with the fogs. I don't know about removing the steering wheel. I'd be worried about blowing the airbag or something.

The turn signal/headlamp switch is not mounted to the steering wheel like the cruise control, but on the steering column. The steering wheel still needs to come off?

Yes, the steering wheel needs to be removed, as the switch is mounted to the column underneath the steering wheel.

The wiper switch can be changed without removing the steering wheel, the headlight switch cannot.

I suppose you need a special tool to remove the steering wheel correct?

A standard steering wheel puller is recommended for sure, and a torx socket to pull the airbag off.

I had a similar situation on my 94 Tercel when changing the wiper stalk. The service manual called for the removal of the steering wheel but I was able to access the screws by turning the wheel to expose the fasteners. I wonder if this is possible on the Corolla..... if not, then that would really suck.

No it is not possible, I have removed it on my 2009 before, there are no screws holding it on.

I see what you're saying. They have made the headlight stalk assy the mount for the wipe stalk (two pieces instead of three). Sometimes you have to wonder...... What were they thinking!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The route I went:

$90 aftermarket fog lights
Used the stock harness
Bought a $30 relay from the dealer (couldn't find it cheaper on short notice)
Used the aftermarket switch in the blank accesory panel.
Took right around an hour (sans research before the DIYs came out)

Overall I believe this to be the best compromise on ease of install, and cost.

Personally the cost of the new stalk and instalation was not worth it to me.

How did you use the stock harness with an aftermarket switch? I have the lights mounted and switch in the dash, but nothing wired. As I stated in my OP I would prefer not have to pass more wires through the firewall (I already drilled a hole for my amplifier).

I priced out the factory relay for the fogs and the dealer wants $80 + tax for the relay. $80 freaking dollars!?!?!?
