Nummi Toyota Plant closing... Any thoughts?

So no more Corolla's will be made in America... I was listening to NPR and they had a plant worker who spoke very highly of the cars made at Nummi. She said that they had lower defect % then Lexus? I sort of found that questionable given all the minor things I've read on the form of issues with there Corolla's most likely made at Nummi.

Are you surprised? I cannot say I blame them for pulling the plug on the plant and assembling the cars in Japan. The problem lies within the US built cars, yet the US government and a lot of the US people are ripping them apart for the benefit of American automakers. It sucks to see the jobs going over seas, but sadly I am not surprised one bit.

Yeah, was watching the news about it. They stated 1% defects came out of that factory. The last car to roll out of there was a red rolla. Its gonna be shipped somewhere and put in a show room.

So what now, Toyota vehicles gonna be imported in?

To be blunt, it was a good move on Toyota's part. I'm sorry, but I can not side with any union. I think it's ridiculous how much some of these people get paid. If you live in the bay area you probably know about the BART union, man they're the worst.

Sad part is they are paid so well but do so little work. Back in Ohio there was a GM plant a friend of mine worked in. They just sat around all day with the machines only running about 2hrs a day to a 10hr work day. They are closed now. Fuckin disgusting. And they wonder why GM went belly up....

TMMC in Canada will likely pick up a lot of the slack. Likely some more Japanese imports as well.

my thoughts are, the US is not business friendly (it used to be "that state is not biz friendly"), nor does it [US] have the brain power to foster programs which help companies grow. CAT and others will most likely start to move workers and assembly outside the US due to obama-care. Toyota is smart in their decision, and in the end we will all have a better vehicle to drive.

Damn, My rolla was made there. Does that mean my car is of lesser quality than Canadian or Japanese made rollas? I already know Jap made rollas are not involved in either of the two recalls(Pedal and rear drums recall). Great!

I guess Tacos will be made in Canada only unless they import some rebadged Hilux's from overseas.

Re: #11
the cars come out meeting Toyota quality. this doesnt mean its free from lurking/hidden issues. just look at the pedal fiasco. Toyota hires an american company who makes the parts in Canada, supposedly Toyota wanted to help support american jobs.... well, look where that got us and Toyota, and i am not even sure how using CTS was helping american job force. hiring a US company these days is more like hiring a middle man as the company is very likely to make the supply outside the US.

So true Tacokid.

BTW The pedal recall and numerous Corolla TSBs has taught me one thing: buy Jap-made yotas.
