Too much road noise?

Hey guys,

So I bought 18 inch MSR rims from a tire and wheel shop in Brampton Ontario (Car Kraze Auto) and it came with Triangle 225/40R18 summer tires. I immediately started hearing noise, something like what you'd hear if you have your window's slightly opened, and it seems to be coming from the back. So I thought it's just road noise and it'd probably go away.

But it's been two weeks now and I still hear the noise and my friend just told me yesterday that Car Kraze Auto has been getting bad reviews about installing the rims and tires they sell. I'd like to have my car checked at a respectable auto shop but I don't know what to tell them, what to check. Could it be the tire itself or they botched the installation? Thanks!

I have never heard of bad instillation on tires/rims.... but lord knows. My wife complains constantly about the wind noise in my car, with the stock tires and steelies. Could just be the new tires with the already "noisy" car. Couldn't hurt to have someone check it out though!!

yeah I'm starting to think its the tires too. Oh and is it possible that the noise is caused by the design of the rims (aerodynamics? lolol)

technically speaking, i guess it could.... but i would say the chances are very minute. I would have them check the tires... Possibly needing an allignment? Just throwing that out there, could be way off

Keep us posted!

dont think the design of the wheels would make a significant difference, and different wheels and tires doesnt mean you need an alignment. the most probable cause of the extra noise is the fact that youve reduced the sidewall of the tire by about half, and they are off brand summer tires. summer tires have a different tread compound to increase grip. grip basically equals friction, friction equals noise.

I'm not saying the new tires means a possible allignment, could just be due then the new tires just the iceing on the cake....

no rubbing at all. ride is smooth as what it was before i had the tires put on, although I do feel the road a lot more. And my friend got his tires changed today too, I noticed and heard the same noise like what I was hearing in my car, only more subtle. He got better tires than me too, they had performance summer tires put on his car.

it's beginning to make sense to me now and thanks to you guys I feel more confident to approach the guys in the shop and define what my issue is. Thanks.

Triangle Tire is Very Noisy .

the noise you are hearing is because of Tire . I had same problem with TRIANGLE or WANLI tires . Some one suggested me Falken tire and after putting falken noise was 80% less . Although summer tires are noisy as compare to allseason tires but Triangle and Wanli are Way noise then any other tires . I will suggest buy flaken tires next time and noise will be very low . But falken are more expensive .good luck and let us know if i am right .

I used to be in the tire business & some tires produce more road noise than others. I read a lot of reviews on Tirerack.com & DiscountTireDirect.com before buying my current tires. I agree with the reviews on how quiet my summer tires are & it's one of the reasons I bought them. They are quiet & handle well on dry & wet pavement & as a bonus they were less than $100 per tire. This is the first time owning General tires for me but the Exclaim UHP is a winner. I've never even heard of the tire you have now so I'm not sure of it, but I'm always leary of no name tires as I always remember having more problems with them.

Thanks guys for all the information. I'm really certain now that the tires are causing the excessive road noise (went to my dad's mechanic, asked him to ride with me and tell me if he hears the noise, and he did say it was the tire).

So now I'm thinking, should I let the tires run its course or replace them? I haven't noticed any change on fuel consumption although I do notice that it takes more pressure now on my part to make the car stop.

Canadiantire has General Exclaim UHP tires too and they said they were good considering the price for it.

Also, if I do decide to replace my present tires, can I sell them to like Active Green+Ross etc?

If you just got the tires I would try to exchange them for something different. I know that Discount Tire here in the USA would do that if you weren't happy.

Road noise is usually determined by the quality of the tires. Triangle tires are garbage.

Go with something from a more respectable brand, do some research on the tire rack before buying to avoid disappointment.

I'm currently shopping for tires myself too, I've heard good things about Simply Tire and Tires23. You might wanna go check both those places out.

Avoid Canadian Tire!

Falken 912 or Kumho KU25?

K so the place I got the tires and wheels from are very reasonable people and they offered to give me $300 for my noisy Triangle tires and I only have to pay 350 to get Falked 912 tires (~ $160 each).

I'm willing to shell out for better, quieter tires, are Falken 912 any good? They also have Kumho KU25 tires, which are cheaper but the guy said is as quiet as the Falkens. Been reading on the net and both are getting mixed reviews so I thought I'd ask you guys.

Thanks!

I have not had any personal experience with either, but as PhatRoyal suggested, i'd read up on them on TireRack
