You will always use less fuel when in gear vs neutral because when in gear there is vacuum created & much less fuel is used than when in neutral with out the vacuum.

When in gear but off the throttle the car is using little to no fuel. This also works great when going downhill with the added benefit of better control of the car since you have engine braking to control the overall speed of the car.
