Video: Rocker arm failure repair?

Anyone seen this video titled 2010 Corolla S 1.8L rocker arm failure repair?

Was wondering if someone else would reword or explain in greater detail how it happened besides there 'mis-shift' and huge power loss, cause my corolla feels underpowered -.- =P

Two things strike me as being odd.

1) He is doing a somewhat complicated repair on a brand new car = no warranty. He has obviously modified the exhaust, and no doubt done other things to the vehicle to have Toyota wash their hands of his warranty. There is no way Toyota would pass that engine as being OK from factory or even OK to run after this incident, it would be seriously underpowered. Mis-shift what?!?...he went from 4th to 1st? One would think fuel cut and/or rev limiter would have helped prevent damage if he was revving into red-line to grab the next gear up. He isn't giving the details either of how it happened.

2) He dropped valve stem caps into the engine. It doesn't phase this guy, he says 'that's what the oil pickup screen is for' and just buys some more and keeps on going with his jimmy-rig tool and coat hanger rocker arm placement/TDC detector tool.

Granted he fabbed up a tool and it looks like it worked as it started up...but dang, the carelessness and cavalier attitude speaks volumes as to what he does to the vehicles when they are working, and I would never let that guy touch my car. I am surprised it ran.

The rev limiter is the fuel cut. It only controls engine speed by cutting fuel. This only prevents an over rev from being cause by your foot on the gas.

However, if you are in 3rd gear at red line, and shift into second instead of fourth, once the clutch is engaged the engine will encounter a "mechanical over rev", which would cause the damage shown.

If all it does in this car is throw the rocker arms off then he is lucky. Previous cars I've had woud require you to rebuild the enitre head if you over revved.

Based on video evidence it looks like Stock Headers, and Intake... which means that even if he put a muffler on the Car... Toyota cannot void his warranty. It only voids the warranty of the Exhaust. They would have to prove that a Muffler caused the Engine to fail and drop 7 rocker arms... I doubt that would happen.

My guess is Toyota did their usual Visual Assessment.

Checklist...
- Young Male - Check
- Muffler - Check
- Assume he redlined it before - Check

Sorry kid VOID Warranty

I never done that in my 30+ years of driving a manual.
