weird problem

so today, i was parked in a hill slanted down backwards. i was in battery mode of the car just chilling and listening to music. then i try to leave and i twist my key to start the car. i go into reverse as always to get out. i reverse enough so i brake and shift to D. problem starts here. car didn't stay still or move forward when i let go of the gas. it kept going backwards. so i brake and think, oh sh*t. so i release my brake and then gassed my car. car kept moving backwards and no rev sound was heard. I finally hit the car behind me going like 1-2mph. (owner of the car is my teacher and was cool about it) so finally i turned car off and restarted it. in a situation like this, should it happen another time, what should i do?

I am guessing you didn't actually have it in drive. Were you looking behind you the whole time it was rolling bacwards?

That was my thought too, you just didn't have it completely in gear so it never changed to drive from reverse. Go to a hill w/o anyone around & see if you can duplicate the problem.

How much grade would you say this hill was? Could it possibly be a combination of not giving it enough gas, and the delay of our drive by wire system?

I can almost floor the car and get my foot off the pedal before my car crosses 2000 RPMS. It doesn't *seem* as bad now since the pedal recall, but the response is still ssssllllllooooowwwww.

On a hill with a car behind you I would suggest easing off the brake as you're getting onto the accelerator to prevent that problem in the future.

+1

Use the same technique as you would with a 5-speed on a steep hill & use the ebrake!

Use the hand brake and release it just as the car is about to move. My car have a sort of delayed accelerator response and I use the hand brake most times.

learn to use both feet, one on brake and one on gas since you have auto.

This is also my practice for starting on slope for auto.
Use the left foot for brake to hold the car on slope.
Use the right foot to apply gas gradually until you feel the car trying to move.
Then release the brake and apply more gas. The car could then be controlled to move forward (quickly or very slowly) without any backward rolling.

In a similar way for backing up a slope for parking purpose to prevent forward rolling. Left foot for brake to hold the car. Right foot for gas to move the car.

But for normal driving, only the right foot is used for gas and brake.

When you release the brake on deep slope, the idling rev in D will not be able to hold the car. There is a time-lag (delay) when you move your right foot from the brake pedal to the gas pedal. There is also an extra time-lag for the car engine to response to your applied gas.
Both of these time-lags will cause your car to roll backward to hit some one from behind in the parking space.

So it is time to learn "the left foot to hold and the right foot to gas" method for starting on slope and parking on slope.
