so, today i removed front struts in preperation of sending out the springs for my spring drop project, and was documneting DIY procedures with lots of pics. i remove the plastic shroud under the wipers,,,, and m-f'er, a wiper assembly bolt is not bolted down and is hand loose, backed out about 1/8-3/16" !!!!
question is, did the dealer monkeys remove the whole wiper assembly and surrounding parts to replace the engine? or did it come this way from the factory? anyone have a service guide that shows procedure for replacing the engine?? needless to say, TMS USA will be hearing from me....... again.
this one is on the passenger side, and notice it has a steel washer backing the bolt head, was backed out and hand loose
this one is driver side, notice no steel washer backing the bolt head (WTF)
I doubt it came that way from the factory. My thinking is the mechanic didn't tighten one bolt and left the washer off the other. These types of things annoy the crap out of me.
You cant always trust mechanics to put things back the way they were. When I had my front bumper replaced, they left out a lot of those little black push clips. I secured a lot of stuff underneath with zip ties after I heard everything rattling on the highway.

this is why TMS USA will be hearing from me. i was even given the "we do this all the time" bs bit from the Toyota field rep (who was an idiot btw).
after looking at the mechanism more closely, if that bolt backed out all way and i ran the wipers, the whole wiper assembly could have pivoted around the other mount, and it would have pulled/ripped the plastic shroud under it up and out onto the windshield !!
this is not what i am worried about. i now have concern that other stuff was not put back correctly, possibly minor things not really to worry about, or possibly something major that could cause a accident.
this is the problem with these mechanics working at toyota. they dgaf. my father's highlander went in for a oil change a while back and a few bolts holding the undercarriage plastic are missing.
adds even more fuel to the old saying if you want things done right do it yourself... which as why i do all my own work, i was never satisfied with the sloppy work done at most garages

i called TMS USA, all they did was send the info over to the dealer. dealer called me and i explained the issue. service guy says "i dont know why we would be under there".
so, does anyone know if a dealer would remove the wiper assembly during a engine replacement??

Nope, it doesn't seem to make any sense to have to even touch it.

i know it would be hard to reach behind to the intake side if the motor was in but this assembly was not removed. but i do not know if a dealer service person would need to do anything as such during engine replacement...?
if dealer did not touch it then this would indicate a real quality issue with Toyota !!

i personally am lead to believe its a problem with dealerships and the techs working there, i guess we'll never know and its something we have to deal with. after what i've been through, i know i will never go back to that dealer again.
maybe one of the techs thought they should remove the assembly, started to loosen the bolt, realized it wasant necessary and forgot to tighten it back. btw, would you not have to remove the stock damper in order to remove the engine ? just my thought, but if you remove the stock damper then the proper way is to remove the cowl and wiper assembly as well. i could be wrong.
I would think they would pull the cowl off to do the engine work, which requires removing the wiper arms, but I'm not sure why they would need to touch any of the bolts underneath that, but nobody can verify if they did or didn't at this point.

you mean the x-bar damper? thr answer would be no because you dont need to undo the nuts to the shock towers. the x-bar comes off by lifting the hood.
