My fiance has been driving an 06 Corolla S since we bought it new in 06. As some of you know from my previous thread, she bought it without me and got dicked on the financing. Long story short, her parents want it and they are willing to take it even with the neg equity so we are clean of the car (which is now over 100k and climbing).
I have narrowed our choices down between a 2010 Yaris sedan with the second power option which I can get for about 300 a month 0% interest, and a 2010 LE with sunroof/leather which I can get for about 370 a month 0% interest. She likes the Yaris, and I will not have to drive it, but it seems that it is a bit small. The safety ratings were just as high as the Corolla per the window sticker on both vehicles so I guess it is reasonably safe in the event of an accident. A carseat in the middle of the rear seat seems to be a bit large (at least the seat we have) but she will only be commuting this car anyway as roadtrips are normally done in our 2010 S.
She has averaged around 36mpg in our 06, and from what I have read and based on her driving style, she will easily get the same/more out of the Yaris. From my experience with my 2010 S, I would guess we would be getting less out of the LE, but the difference in cost is negligible. The estimated resale in 5 years between the two are about the same (Yaris at 34% and Corolla at 39%) so there isn't much difference there.
What would you guys do? Cave and let her get the car she really seems set on (Yaris) even though after a year or so she will probably be sick of driving a subcompact, or pull the man card and choose the LE for her and leave it at that? I personally really do not care for the LE interior, but the majority of the issue I have is the material the seats are made of which will be gone with the leather anyway.
I would pull the man card and the 2010 LE. $70 is really too small to discern for a lot more car.
Somehow the Yaris sedan has never really appealed to me at all, with odd styling, counterintuitive center stack gauge cluster and sub-standard interior materials.

if she pays for it she should get what she wants... i like the hatch back more and the corolla seems less quality to me then the yaris... just my view and i had them both
I will be paying for it. I want her to be happy with her car but for 2k more the corolla seems to me a better buy. She seems really set on the yaris though so we will see. After some research I found many getting 40-45 MPG on the highway.

Get a matrix then, 100 billion times better than a yaris.
I have contemplated the matrix. The local dealership doesn't have any so I have to drive 60 miles to the dealership I will be buying the car from to check it out. I may make the trek this evening as I want her to actually drive the cars rather than base the purchase on it being "cute"
I've seen the Yaris S sedan & it looked really cool. I still think the Corolla is a much better car though long term. I'm averaging 35-36 mpg in my 09 Corolla S in mixed driving.

We looked tonight and I fell in love with the Matrix S AWD. She still likes the Yaris. I don't understand.
you can't win them all, especially with women. The Yaris is still a Toyota, so you can't really complain, as you yourself have a Corolla already.

Another thing about the Yaris "S"...it seems that they're very hard to find, much like the XRS model and a Camry SE manual. I also think that the Corolla is taking away much of the remaining sales of the Yaris besides the rest of its competition (Fit, Versa, Koreans).
