rule #1, if you did the damage and are trying to get it covered under warranty, dont post about it. you'd be surprised as to who reads these forums; google is a powerful data mining tool if you know how to use it, etc.
good luck with it, let us know if the dealer says "no way that can just happen on its own", or, "some broken crap in there and we'll fix it under warranty". believe it or not, when dealer sales are down the dealer will try and make up for that doing warranty work...... but the dealer has to be careful because depending on the warranty claim the dealer makes it might get a visit by the regional rep to come inspect the damage, etc.
These cars have ECMs that record out-of-ordinary engine parameters. It can throw a code and not light the CEL. It would just maintain it in memory for a period, depending what the code was. What you describe your wife doing shouldn't have done damage because of the RPM (throttle) limiters, unless she was already going at cruising speed when she downshifted to second and the transmission pulled the engine well above redline. (the throttle limiter cuts out when the engine hits redline preventing damage, but downshifting a standard at speed can still over-rev it)
No oil will certainly cause the problems you describe––and worse. If you have records of them doing an oil change very recently, then guard that paperwork. They may need to replace that engine.
She didn't blow the motor. There are clips that hold the rocker arm on. well 3 of those clips broke and let the rocker come free and cause the motor to not want to run and shake bad.
The tech replaced the clips and took the car for a 15 mile hard drive. Said it drives like a dream.
He said that the only time he has seen those clips fail is when the motor is over revved. But since he couldn't prove anything that they had to cover it under the warranty.
So a big thank you to Toyota for there great service
