So I bought a 65mm/14 flute sst oil filter wrench off amazon via a link someone posted here and I find out after I drain my oil that it doesn't fit because the manufacturer apparently has shitty quality control. So now I'm calling all over town trying to find another one but nobody has it, just the 65/67. May end up getting the band style out of desperation. </rant>

I have made this post before, and I'm going to do it again. If you are going to change your own oil, do yourself a favor and just bite the bullet and get an OEM one. Part# 09228-06500-02. Depending on where you look, you can get it from anywhere from about $40.00. It fits perfect, unlike the others. Even our techs have used those so called others, and they just come and get that one, but then again, they do more oil changes than most. There complaint about the others is that it may fit, but they end up rounding the housiing and if that is the case, you may have to buy a new one of those.
That is my two cents worth, just thought I'd pass it along. Good luck

Some people have bought it and it fit their 2009 corolla, but they must have poor quality control because it was the tiniest bit too small for mine and it just didnt work. Im glad I found that out when my car was up on stands with all the oil out. I called everywhere and even bought a vice-grip style oil filter wrench but even that failed. Going without a filter change this time
Ill probably get the OEM one and cry myself to sleep for paying $40

I was in the same situation about a week ago. I bought a 65mm / 14 Flute filter wrench from NAPA and it would not fit. Like the original poster, I had drained the oil before I tried to take off the filter. I was rotted! Had to pour the used oil back in. I ordered a 64 mm wrench from eBay and it fit like a glove. I'm definitely going to be returning the one I bought at NAPA. It was supposedly 1 mm bigger and still didn't fit.
On a related note. I found that my dealer is an excellent place to pick up oil. I'm in Canada and couldn't find 0W20 anywhere. I went to the dealer expecting to pay a fortune for it and it only ended up being $5.60 per liter. That is an awesome price for synthetic oil. I'll be getting it at the dealer from now on.

This is the same one that I bought & it fits perfect.
Why couldn't Toyota just use the same oil filter as they have used for decades?

That sucks... I was also one who recommended the KD tools wrench because it works fine for me. Luck of the draw is definitely poor business. I hope your next wrench is perfect!
I have the same exact K-D Tools filter wrench and I have had no problems after 4 oil changes. It likes to stick to the filter housing but a little tweak in the opposite direction with the wrench jars it loose. Sorry about your luck, hope you get it sorted out.

It doesn't fit because our cars require a 64mm 14 flute socket. I use Matco's p/n: TOY640 oil filter socket. Fits like a glove and only about $15 and it's quality steel.

Why is everyone recommending 65mm then? The one I got is 65mm, but measures 64 and it doesn't fit.

Yeap. I did the same thing and bought a 65mm socket one thinking it would work and got stuck in the middle of an oil change for a friends car. Her car had been serviced last at Toyota and was way over torqued. I had been using the large pair of plyers method on my car, but couldn't get hers to budge. Luckily there is a mechanic shop across the street and they let me borrow there toyota/lexus kit. The same TOY640 socket was in that kit. Ended up having to put it on an impact gun to loosen hers because the tech at Toyota over torqued it so bad. It even gave the impact gun hell coming off.
Needless to say next time the Matco truck came around I purchased the exact same TOY640 tool.
