is it feasable to tow 1000-1500lbs with a 1.8? not on a regular basis just a few times a year for a couple hundred miles. my trailer weighs 450 and quad 600. for towing i should leave it in 3rd with the auto tranny correct?

I towed my 950kg boat at the beginning and end of the summer for about 100km of highway driving plus 50km of country road on my old 2001 Corolla S (standard) and never had a problem. I forget how big its engine was.
NOTE: There were no steep hills on the route I took, and very little in the way of stopping.
No I would really not recommend it. The max towing payload is 1500 lbs, and that's not including you and your stuff in the car. The motor is not strong enough and you will burn out your brakes in a hurry.
i have a dirt bike that weighs 150, and it would be nice for hauling small stuff like building supplies so i may go ahead and do it. the only thing i'm worried about is my borla muffler. not sure if it's in the way.
I have yet to see a quad weight 600lbs. If you have any fluids or gear on your quad it weighs more than you think. Plus anything in your car and the driver or passengers and you can easily go over. Any hills along your route can really over work the transmission and engine as well.

I saw a 10th Gen Corolla towing a small trailer yesterday, it looked like it was not having any issues. Like others have said, just install a trans cooler & make sure the weight is okay. I used to pull a 18' boat with my 91 Camry with a 2.0L without issue.

how does the 1.8 compare with the 2.0 in a rav4? my rav was rated for 6000. i guess the tranny was a lot beefier. it pulled 2500 like a charm. what kind of tranny cooler do i need? the tranny lines run in the radiator. do i need one with a seperate radiator in front of the coolent radiator with a fan? mechanic at the dealer said it should be fine. but there not always the brightest.

What year Rav? The 2006+ ones are either 2.4 I4 or 3.5l V6. I also doubt it was rated to pull 6000#'s. The new ones with the V-6 are only rated to pull 3500 lbs with the tow package.

Its not just about the weight and motor when it comes to towing. It is rated at a certain weight because the car is only safe at a certain weight. Sure I could throw 25klbs behind the F350 but that doesn't mean it is safe. It would pull it, but what happens when it has to stop, the wind starts blowing, or the trailer gets out from under ya?
