Found a post on another site where someone mentioned that for 2011, the model lineup for the Corolla did not include the top line models (XLE and XRS). Given that the XRS and XLE are "slow" sellers in comparison to the S, LE and Base models, and the lack of availability as well on dealer lots, would we believe that Toyota would do such a thing?
i would believe this. just because most dealers in the bay area dont have xrs's in stock meaning not many people buy xrs's. and building an engine that not many cars use=waste
Besides the XRS doesn't sell too many. Just like in the 9th Gen, they only sold the XRS for a couple years then it Vanished.
Actually in that case, Toyota needed to get rid of the excess 2ZZ-GE engines and 6-speed manuals it still had on hand after discontinuing the Celica GT-S so it just dumped them into the Corolla and hence the XRS was born.
Shame that they didn't produce more since that car was quite a gem.

And in this case (10th Gen)... it had to get rid of the excess 2AZ engines from the SciontC/Camry/Rav4.
What a shame... at least the 2ZZ still lives on in the Lotus.
At least the 11th Gen may be lucky and toss in the 2AR-FE once that engine needs to be phased out.

Never thought about it that way... makes sense.

Actually Ray, for the Corolla, the 2ZZs were destined for the Matrix XRS, since they were built on the same assembly line in Canada, whereas the Celica was built in Japan. I'm thinking the 2ZZs for the Cor/Matrix were built in Canada.
Anyway, if you can even build a Corolla XRS in your area, you can only build with an automatic transmission. It seems the manual (model 1835) is gone. However, I'm curious if you can still get the XRS in Canada.

I don't know where you got your info from... But the 2ZZ-GE is built in JAPAN, and the 1ZZ was build in West Virgina & Ontario.
The 2ZZ was not built for the Matrix, it was the other way around. The Matrix was built for the 2ZZ, and specifically given the name Matrix after the Metal Matrix Composite used in the cylinder walls of the 2ZZ-GE.
It would be a shame if they remove the XRS from the model line, I have an "S" manual transmission. but if the insurance wasn't so damn high on the XRS i would have gotten that. And also we needed the XRS as toyota owners to keep all the 'HondaHeads' bragging about the Civic Si.
If the XRS goes we are all going to be the victims of Servere Honda Gloating!

My bad, I forgot to realize that the 2ZZ had the Yamaha heads, so Japan for sure. Too bad sales went down for the Matrix XRS as well, as with the 9G Corolla XRS, both were canned.
Another theory could be is that Toyota is saving their stock of 2AZs for the Matrix S models, and probably 90% of them are auto anyway.

Honda owners have nothing to gain from it either. If you're worried about Honda guys, perhaps you are driving the wrong car. Like Toyota, Honda has nothing else to offer other than the Si right now.
Toyota has removed the XRS (after 2006) from the lineup before, so it wouldn't be a surprise if they did that again for the C and M.
I dont think the XRS and civic si are comparable, the civic si is a MUCH faster car and all around better performance. dont get me wrong i like corollas and everything but the civic si outperforms the xrs in every aspect in my opinion.

Ding. Ding. Ding.
Right on the money.
