"S" gear in Automatic 09 XRS

Been asking many times on youtube, but still have not gotten an answer.

I drive an 09 Corolla XRS automatic. Can someone please tell me what the "S" gear is for? Is that for "sporty" or for snow traction?

I would guess that it would stand for "Sport" or "Standard Shift mode" ???

Does it have the + or - signs when it is in the S mode ?

Otherwise, just make something up like....."Super mode" or "Salsa mode"
or "Stud mode" !

Thats is Sport and I think you can just leave it there and drive normally and I think its so that it revs higher than normal and then you can use tiptronic if you want

LOL...

SPORT / STANDARD

you push the shifter Forward to shift up
you push the shifter down (pull towards the rear) to downshift

it is tiptronic shifting.

Basically it works this way...
when you pop it to the left it goes into 4th Gear Automatically.

What ever gear you are in, is the max gear it will go to.
So it will act like an Automatic up to gear 4 if you don't shift at all.

If you have it in 1st, it will hold in that gear until you shift up.

Hope this helps.

Also downshifting works the same

as stated above, it is basicly an over-glorified "slap shift" as i've heard it called.

+1

From my knowledge if I can explain it in any easier wording.

Its Sport, known as Sport Shifting, only in Automatic transmissions.

You can control the RPMs, you push up on the shifter to the "+" to upshift or pull down on the shifter to the "-" to downshift just like a manual without the clutch, and stalling etc.

I've only driven a Automatic w/ a sport shifter once, and it was a rental. If I remember, I think it will let you red line, but not go past that.

Thanks guys/gals. That's exactly what it is. I found this out from a friend of mine who has the same feature on his BMW. Was a little excited to discover something I didn't know before about my car. Adds a little excitement to a boring automatic lol.

I drove my friends G35 and the tip tronic on that is sooo cool....if you leave it in S and you slow down for a light....it kinda acts like a manual where it down shifts as you come to a stop.....a different way than normal....its a very noticeable down shift....up to maybe 2.5-3k revs
