Annoyed

As you know i have been searching for winter tires for the past couple of days. It is next to impossible here in halifax, nova scotia to find someone to install tires without using TPMS and having down sized my tires for winter from 205/55R16 to 195/65R15 mounted on steel. The local toyota dealer will sell me the tires and rims but not do the install without first installing TPMS, its in their insurance policy, canadian tire told me the same. Walmart would not install on the car because they are not of recommended size.

I have a email from transport canada stating " While vehicles equipped with TPMS are allowed in Canada, TPMS are not mandatory on new and imported vehicles sold in Canada. Furthermore, there is no federal regulation currently in place that prohibits disabling TPMS systems on passenger cars "

I am not sure why individual companies can make this recommendation and go against a federal regulatory body, seems like a huge money making scheme to me. I phoned several other toyota dealers and they have no issue with this.

They don't need to know what kind of car you drive. Show up there and ask them for steelies with the tire size capped, balanced and inflated at 32psi and walk out with them. Install them in your driveway. All you need is a jack, a socket 19mm and a torque wrench.

When I bought my winter tires from Toyota last year, I was given a choice if I wanted the sensors. I went from 17" to 16" for winter.

Showing up with rims and tires and the doing the work after in your driveway is a great concept for some. Unfortunately its not a option available for everyone and shouldn't have to be, woman, the disabled, non mechanically inclined, etc. Down sizing in the winter is a common practice, and in fact recommended as a tall sidewall and a narrower tire will preform better in snow. It is not a requirement to run TPMS and no law against disabling it, (in canada) so why are so many companies against completing this kind of work? If it was an insurance issue, which they say it is, companies would have a waiver to complete to free them of any responsibility and not hold them liable. It is strictly a money issue that companies are using as a way to make money. On a small compact such as the corolla it should not cost $1480 to run a set of winter rims, tires and sensors. That includes $70 each for 15 " rim, $79 each for sensor, $120 each for general tire, $20 per tire for studding, throw on some tax and installation and don't forget the criminal charge of reprogramming twice a year. It is simply unacceptable.

In that case just go to small local shop. I'm sure there are plenty of them in Halifax and they will be happy to have your business. Don't limit yourself to the huge suppliers.

Go into the dealer or repair shop. But the 4 tires and wheels. Toss them in the car. Go around the block and go someplace where you get your oil changed. Have them put on your tires.

I agree...it's stupid...but since it seems like an epidemic in NS...wondering if it's a provincial transport requirement.

I can understand the disabled part. As for not being mechanically inclined...sorry if this sounds condescending but my 120lb wife can change a spare tire, its in the manual. What if one had no AMA and got a flat? If one isn't mechanically inclined enough to change a tire then they should really should pony up for more TPMS's because they shouldn't be doing anything a step above filling up with gas or topping up windshield washer fluid IMO.

You are missing the point, sure my wife can change a flat and put on a spare if need be but i don;t expect her to lug around 4 rims and tires and change them all in the parking lot, she shouldn't have to. I bet your wife is great at changing the oil and shovelling the driveway too!!

Do you have Costco in HFax? Great deal on tires/steelies and if they give you that BS you can get head office involved. Or order from 1010tires.com out of B.C. they will mount and ship but then you will need to self install or go to a shop to have them put on.

Just order a set of wheels & tires from TireRack.com.
