So I've been looking for ways to lower my expenses lately, and today while doing some headlight restorations at a buddy's used car lot I see a 95 SL500 w/ 96000 miles on it. For shits and giggle I ask him what I can get out of my car and into it for. After he did some math and what not he came back with $4500 trading in my car. I still owe $10,000 on the corolla with another 4 years to go and he said I could get the SL for $7500 cash. Essentially I am coming out $3000 ahead on my car. Insurance would go up about $8/month for the SL w/ same coverage and lower gas mileage, but a muchhh faster car.
Also he would take my car as is. Leaving me with factory S wheels, springs, and cd player to get rid of.
Any thoughts on why I should stay with the rolla???
I say stay with the rolla because of the maintenance on the Merc. The car is 14 years older, and presumably has more miles, plus German cars arent known for their reliability.

- You bought it Brand New
- More MPGs, more money for ya
- Going from a 4dr to a 2dr, less inconvenient if your carrying passengers
- Less cargo space
- Less Miles, more life w/ the Corolla
- Addd your own touch to it
- You may not have as much power, but for me I thought it was good enough
Personally I'd keep the Corolla, I also get many compliments on the way it looks, you also have white too

My last car was a BMW 535I loaded. I traded it in for the Corolla when gas was sky high. No regrets.
But as the Corolla is going to be 3 years old in May I'm considering a Hyundai Tuscon Limited with panoramic roof. Not rushing into it though.
I wouldn't do it. The cost of keeping that benz is too high. I will only buy a german car brand new, usually problems started to arise when as the car get older. My buddy got an older SL55, it has a leak in the hydraulic suspension, it costs him 1200 just to replace a seal...that's insane. Lately he is having problem with leaking soft top....who knows how much to get that fix again.
Corolla, you bought it brand new. At least you will enjoy worry free driving within the warranty period. Better yet, toyota is good with reliablility. Cheap for maintenance too.
Buying the Benz might be nice but I wouldn't get rid of your Corolla to get it. If you could afford to just buy it than yes, but not to save you money. You would most likely spend more money keeping that Benz running. If money is that tight than try & get a 2nd PT job to earn a few extra dollars.

After doing some more research I have found that the original 93-95 Engine Wiring Harnesses deteriorate and are real expensive to replace. That another 2-3K should be negotiated off the car if it doesn't have a new one. That may just be the deciding factor for me.
I would only do it if you have an older beater car for a DD. Cause German cars are expensive to fix and tend to need freaquent trips to the dealer. So have an older civic, camry or corolla is nice for getting around and leaving the benz for the weekends.
Not a chance.
1) The SL500 was super ugly in 95
2) Gas mileage
3) Maintaining a 15 year old overpriced piece of shit
I think that about sums it up.

i grew up with german cars, so im all about them, but you would just be downgrading if you got the benz. dont get me wrong, the benz is a beautiful car, but if you are doing this to save money, you will be doing the complete opposite.
you can sell your car for way more instead of trading it in. but, if you really want to trade in your car, research more before you do. there are plenty of cars out there that are powerful and luxurious for much better deals. you just came across this car rather than looking for it, so you really dont know whats out there.
if you really want something thats fast and luxurious around that price, consider looking into the E36 BMW M3. if you can find one in good running condition, those would be ideal. much better on gas than the sl, looks better, and its "M" built.
Not a bad lookin car. Seems to have a long hood from the couple pics I looked at. I kinda like it, but I'd never trade my corolla for one if it is a daily driver, mostly because of age.
