Canada FOB problems

Hey guys,

Lately I have been having problems with my smart key, it hasn't been letting me enter the car(unless i use the key) and the push button doesn't light up. I have 2 FOBs and this weekend was the first that noticed the problem on one of them, then today the other one acted up and will not do anything but the other will... I did a search but it doesn't seem like any one had this problem(well, at least posted it). It seems like the FOBs are "dead".. any help would be great. Thanks

Did you do any wiring work lately? I accidently killed my FOB this weekend. After re-connecting the battery all was well. Give that a shot.

The only thing i have done on the car was some tail lights and that was pretty much plug and play.. I have an appointment tomorrow morning to get it checked out, i was just wondering if anyone has encountered this problem and what helped them

How old is your car?
I have smart key too and was advised by Jeff Lange here that the battery is only good for 2-3 years. I replaced both mine at 26 months just to be safe. Bought them from Future Shop.

I tired disconnecting the battery yesterday but it didn't help.. Found out today that it was 2 dead batteries. Weird that they would both go at the same time

I keep a spare key-fob battery in my car for just this reason. Cost all of $3 and well worth it to have one in a pinch (not that their truely needed, but still nice)

How do you replace the battery in the sealed unit? Just take a flat head screw driver and pry it apart?

It's very straightforward. Illustrated step by step in your manual.

Both batteries going is very common. They are constantly transmitting (smart key) even when not in use and dies about the same time.
This have been my phobia when I got this car. There is'nt even a key hole to use the key for emergency when the battery dies.

Yeah, i'm thinking that i'm going to somehow find a way to bypass the security system and install a "back-up" way to start my car if the FOB stopped working all together. Shouldn't be THAT hard to figure out just need to know how the security system is hooked up...

That was my first thought. Then the more I studied it the interconnection to the ECM and the rest of the systems I gave up and decide to just keep a 26 months reminder to change batteries on both FOBs.
Should you work out a foolproof bypass system, please post. I'm sure other smart key owners will also like to know.

If you read the owner's manual they explain how to start the car if the fob dies completely. It is the same in all Toyota/Lexus models, you just hold the fob to the start button until the light comes on, then press it like normal.
