He will not damage your car because it is sweeping the needles. He will damage your car because he is already driving it before it has fluids everywhere they need to be. That sweep lasts two to three seconds from startup. Why on earth would he already need to be in motion and shifting in that amount of time?
If your dad is anything like mine you can't tell them anything, even if its logical. Funny generation.
Anyways, make sure you are using a quality synthetic oil for extra protection as he is undoubtedly not driving it easy after startup either. Its your best bet against cold startup wear.

Damn I feel sorry for you man. Luckily no one drives my car but me. Everyones afraid at home to drive it because its dropped on coilovers lol. It must suck to just sit there and watch your car get beat on by your pops.

Parents driving your car is scary even at my age (37). I let my dad borrow my Honda. The first thing he said when he walked in the door and handed me my keys? "Don't worry about it, the damage isn't that bad."
Back on topic. Tell him to let the car warmup before he drives it or he doesn't drive it anymore. If he doesn't get it after that, install a kill switch so only you know where it is at.
man i wish my dad was like your family RollaRed haha ... but even if i lowered my car, my dad would still drive it because he drives a '87 Acura Legend Coupe as his summer car which is pretty low so ...
my dad is old too and when we didnt even buy the car yet...we were test driving it....I got out and he hopped in and he turned the key again and it made that awful grinding noise.

The needle sweep only takes a second & is done right away before you could even get going. You should not let your car warm up. It's best to start the car & begin driving but drive very gently. This will allow the car to warm up faster & not waste gas while warming up. The only time I would allow it to warm up would be for 10-15 seconds to make sure that oil is flowing in extremely cold weather.
We had a huge discussion about this last winter too.

Well, I have my own house (with my wife) but same situation. She won't drive it with all the stuff i've done to it, so it's just me and my baby. I still drive her 09 Mazda 3i though But it's super-stock.... for now....

I was thinking of a 15 to 30 second warmup time, not leaving it for several minutes, I should have clarified. From the way the OP described it his dad had the car in gear and rolling before the oil pressure even had a chance to come up.
No warmup is required - just don't hammer the throttle and red line it before the engine has warmed up.
Butif you wanna keep him from taking off so quickly...put the E-Brake on...HARD! Then he'll have to stop and disengage it before driving...long enough to complete a gauge sweep. If running a standard...leave it in gear when you turn it off (although I hate it when smart-@ss mechanics do that to me...and the car lurches after I release the clutch) But it makes you pause...
Another trick...leave the radio loud before you turn the car off. When you're dad drives the car...he'll be stunned enough by the loud noise to address that before he drives.
