Hey,
I have done alot of research and found there is alot of people with corollas still under warranty and have 3rd gear grinding. i have had my transmission replaced twice within 4000 miles because of this problem and now toyota is telling me my brand new car is no longer under warranty. If i can get enough people that is having the same problem email me I am going to start a class action lawsuit so please if you want to help me, yourself, and others out email me at forsythekyle91@yahoo.com with your name, year of car, and related problem. put corolla 3rd gear in subject box so i know your not spam thanks.
This is somewhat related to the problem. do you guys ever have the Reverse gear grind when your driving, stop, and switch to reverse? Happens to me when I'm about to park reverse numerous times.

when you put it in reverse you need to go into 1st gear first bc or the safety the trans has on it so if your not going 1st then reverse thats why it grinds

Ooooh ok, I'll try that and see if it stops grinding, hopefully it does
Thanks for the advice

Reverse doesn't have synchros in the gearbox, all cars will grind going into reverse if the countershaft in the trans is still spinning. Every stick car I've ever driven will do the same thing, doesn't matter whose it is.

when i first got my car it was grinding in reverse but i was to that if you go into 1st then reverse it wont grind thats what i do and now it dont grind lol but that is true most car will grind into reverse but not all do
Now for those with the reverse-crunch, if your synchro's aren't aligned when you try to shift into reverse, you'll get resistence...and a crunch if you pull too hard and force it. Simple solution for this common problem across all manufal transmission cars.
I had posted a problem like this a couple months ago and i didn't know there was a tsb for it. Going to take it in this week and see what they tell me.

2 questions. Does this only affect the 2009 corollas? And at what mileage did people start to notice the 3rd gear grind?
The TSB only applies to some 2009 models produced before the vin showed at the bottom, however, the OP has a 2010 and is experiencing a 3rd gear grind issue.
I noticed the problem on the first test drive at 11k miles. I chocked it up to being unfamiliar with the car. My car only does it on the 1st or 2nd 3rd gear shift on sub 40 degree days. If I shift super slow in to third gear, it doesnt grind. Shifting at a NORMAL speed, however, produces a nice crunch. If ya' cant find it, grind it, right?! lol.

I wonder if it could be a tranny fluid viscocity issue, since you said its worse when its cold. Meaning when the fluid warms up it goes away or is better. If it was strictly a syncro issue i would think it would happen all the time.
