Rear Defroster Question

I used my rear defroster for the firs time on my new (Sept) 2010 Corolla. I noticed that the upper 5 (or so) elements do not heat. They seem to have a different pattern than the elements below. Perhaps these are the antenna and are not meant to heat??

If so, it's kinda lame as that part of the rear window stays frosted. But either way I'd like to know if this is NORMAL or SOMETHING BROKEN?

Do you mean the 5 that are bunched really high up on the rear windshield? If so, it's normal that they don't heat.

Well, it's a full 3 inches of "no heat" area. But yes, they are high up near the top and have a different pattern than the all the rest of the lower elements. What DO they do? Antenna?

If that's true, then what is the antenna on the roof?
