Question How to fix a scratched windshield in my 2010 corolla?

Hi All,

I have 2010 Corolla S and few days ago I notice three 2 inch scratches in separated places on my windshield. These are not the usual small, barely visible scratches. I can clearly see then when I drive and they catch my fingernail a bit so they are a bit deeper then usual wear and tear.

Is there any way I can fix them so that at least they are not so much visible?
It drives me nuts that my brand new car has scratches like that already.
Is there any solution to it or is replacing the windshield the only solution?

Thanks,
goe

I don't know of any home remedies, but I'm sure you could find a windshield repair service near by who might be able to fix it. If nothing else, they'll at least be able to give you an idea of what you're working with.

So there really aren't chemicals I can buy at AutoZone or somewhere that could at least help a bit?

A good glass company might be able to compound and buff them out, but scratches that are very deep are there forever. I've never had scratches on my windshield. Any idea what happened?

are you sure its a scratch and not a crack in the glass??

nonetheless, i'd check into your insurance coverage to see if it might be covered. i've had a cracked windshield replace/repaired for free under my insurance without paying the deductible or having my rates go up.

Post pics of the damage you're referring to. Inside and outside shots.

If you find anything Id be interested to know. My passenger window is scratched DEEP from what the dealership tells me was a small rock in the weatherstripping. I didnt realize what was happening until it was too late. I put the window up and down maybe twice and then noticed the scratches

I think it may have been my fault because I notice these scratches a day after I was deicing the windshield using on of those "special" scrape pads or whatever the name of it is. However I always try to be gentle and I don't get how it's possible for me to make scratches like that when I didn't cause anything even remotly close to the same damage in any of ma previous cars in the past and I had both Mazda , Toyota and even Ford cars.

I'll try to post some photos of those scratches soon when my car recovers from the New England winder ice

I have successfully used a glass buffing kit, with small circular wheel buffing pads and window compound, and a motor tool to remove light scratches from bad wipers on a British car. It takes a long time though and you run the risk of optical distortion of the glass if you buff too deep. I don't recall where I got the materials but I think it was Harbour Freight. Also it might have been Eastman (the header paint supplier) or JC Whitney. I think the kit may have been intended for polishing jewelry if that helps. The proper glass buffing compound is the key, as it is much finer than any car rubbing or buffing compounds you might find.
