Ok so i have a lot of friends that are into the tuner game. most are into hondas i hear very often that they can get non vtech engines and make them vtech by changing the head to one with vtech; with that being said can a vvt-i engine (non lift) become a vvtl-i (w/lift) by doing some sort of swap but not a whole engine swap? just curious, and thanks ahead of time.

You're talking about a 1zz conversion to a 2zz. Its possible but would take quite a bit of work. The parts are not as interchangable as lets say a Honda F22 to an H22 head, which is relatively straight forward.
In addition, your signature says you've got a 10th gen 2zr engine. Which is not convertable to a 2zz by any reasonable means.
Hope that answers your question.

Feel free to correct me if I am wrong. Just assuming.

Sadly you cannot. the 1zz and the 2zz have entirely different blocks. Like LeanBurn said, the internals, block, pistons, etc are different. The VVTL-i engine was developed by Yamaha and it would be easier to just find one of those engines and just swap it out. But that just waste's your warranty for the drivetrain. Honda engines are different now and isnt as easy to do stuff like that. It would have to be like a H22 Prelude engine, B20, B18 or something. And yes older honda's I know for sure can just change the head from non vtech to vtech no problem as my friend is currently trying to do. VVTL-i is very complicated and is not compatible with the 2zr

FYI, Vtech makes phones, radios and childrens toys.

Read through the thread again, as several people replied......NOT possible unless you swap an entire engine.

your "tuner" friends probably have engines like a b16,b18,b20/d15,d16,d17/H21,H22/F20,F22/K20,K24.
The Series(B,D,H,F,K) are all different so the vtec heads are not interchangeable. But for example if you have a B18B (Integra LS Motor) you can put a B18A/B18A1/B18A5/B16A...etc VTEC head swap because they belong to the same series which uses the same block.
Unless you have a 2ZZ-FE hypothetically(because it doesnt exist, i dont think), trying to swap a Head off a 2ZZ-GE is near impossible.
*just skip this post like its invisible i dont know what im blabbing about*
alright guys thanks again now i kno 4 sure that if i ever want lift ill have to do a complete engine swap theres a vid on youtube of a guy with a 10th gen i think CE with a 2zz mostly pics but yea its been done already and if i where to do a engine swap it would probably be a is250 09 n up i read the engine bay for our 10th gen corollas r big enough to stuff a 3.5L in there
