When my friend was installing my wheels for me, he noticed that my front stabilizer linkages are loose and he told me to get them replaced...Right now my XRS has about 64,000km. I called the dealer and told me that each stabilizer link costs $180CDN!! That's very costly...
Is there anywhere I can purchase an aftermarket part, or should I pay for the genuine Toyota linkages?
Have you checked the local auto parts store? I looked on ebay and you can snag a pair for $32 here in the US. You might be able to find a place that ships to Canada for slightly more.
Do you mean the front endlnk? What do you mean by loose, the endlink is suppose to be movable to absorb shocks.. Usually the only time you need to replace it is when it is leaking from the boot. And check the nuts that are holding it in place, make sure they are torque to spec.
How loose is loose? Does your friend know what new ones feel like? Just curious, because unless they actually have play (can click/knock, etc.) they are probably fine.
Well, I have no idea and was told the linkages need to be replaced...He's a mechanic and I hope he knows what he's talking about. He further added that the links are loose properly because I lowered my car.
Anyway, I did find a local parts store and ordered a set for $48CDN/link...so not bad.

You should check it yourself and confirm the problem. I had S tech on my car before and now I am running TRD. It has less to do with a lowered car. Remember the endlinks are suppose to move at the ball joint to absorb shock. Unless they are abnormal play or leaks, u don't have to replace them.
Lowering springs contribute to less energy absorption during bumps. That impact energy is then transferred to the shock and linkages. It sure does wear faster with lowering springs.
I've had the same problem with a 2001 Dodge caravan, we used to change the stabilizing links around each 60000-80000kms(changed them twice). The front end was making bad noises when hitting bumps and changing the links resolved the problem, there was actually play in the little ball joints. They were running around 60$ each side at Napa.
I'm surprised that Toyota's linkages are already worn at 60 000kms, unless you do a lot of city driving on rough roads.
Well, I purchased a pair of Japanese 555 stabilizer links today and the ball joints are much tighter than the stock ones; I paid a total of $150CDN with labor.

Do they look any different?

Should take some time to rinse off the wheel well and suspension. Looks like there are lots of snow and salt deposits.....you don't want them to rust quicker than they should. Spray on a layer of rust proof is a good idea too, especially in the eastern coast, they use salt a lot to melt down the snow/ice on the roads.

+1 That needs a good hosing off for sure. I'm wondering if that could have been the cause of the originals feeling loose in any way.

Well, I always keep my car clean but it is nearly impossible during the winter time...It's sunny and dry on one day; you wash you car and then snow for the next few days
