Straight pipe??

Rather than spending hundreds on a new exhaust system what are your opinions on straight piping the exhaust and bypassing a cat. converter all together??

Loud, illegal, horrible sound, check engine light on, poor performance because computer does not see the correct sensors or reading.

As long as you keep the cat you should be fine. You will notice it will be louder without the resonator. Use the same diameter pipe as your axleback and try to find a shop that does mandrel bending as opposed to pinch bending and you should have decent flow and maybe notice some gains as it will be a true catback system. Oh, and spend the extra money for stainless pipe as it lasts a lot longer than the cheap aluminized stuff.

Total noob at this stuff but still learning.

Whats the difference from our stock exhaust to having it custom piped to make it a 'true' catback?

A video of your axleback would be awesome as it seems to be different than what most have used..

In regards to a straight pipe, what is there was just a straight "mid pipe" and stock everything else I aswell do not have that much knowledge regarding these things :/

The stock piping will generally be of a smaller diameter and more restrictive than an aftermarket cat back exhause system. It also has a resonator and is designed to quiet sound. An aftermarket cat-back system is designed of larger diameter pipe which is less restrictive and gets rid of a lot of the factory items that reduce sound and therefore air flow which further lessens the restriction. If the axleback is of a larger diameter than stock then using a larger diameter pipe to replace the mid pipe will lessen the restriction. If the pipe os of the same size then you will not notice much of a difference unless the stock system has a large resonator. I haven't looked at the stock system so I am not sure on our Corollas. If it has what appears to be a second muffle in the mid pipe then it is a very restrictive resonator. If it appears to just be a bulged pipe then it will be less restrictive and pointless to replace if it is the same size piping as the axlesback.

It is like taking a deep breath and trying to exhale it through a garden hose as opposed to a drinking straw. The larger diameter is much less restrictive and allows the engine to breathe better.

Ahhh ok. So pretty much less restriction.

Would a aftermarket resonator help? Way down the road from now since I'm on a break from modding, I want to add headers, from what I hear it will add plenty of rasp on the 2.4s, a resonator will help in this case. I would add a new cat and a new resonator. Would this make it a 'custom' header and catback?

Any cons stated above?

The stock cat will give plenty of flow so no need to upgrade that unless you are going for HUGE power (big boost) and trying to keep it street legal. Here is the full system layout:

Header, factory cat, mandrel bent stainless pipe of the same diameter of your axleback between your cat and rear section.

No need to take it beyond that unless you are going big power and the exhaust is your choke point. I haven't looked at how restrictive the factory system is so I am not even sure that the center section needs to be replaced. Work and the 8 month old is keeping me pretty busy and I haven't had the urge to crawl under the car in -10F weather with 15 inches of snow on the ground.
