I bough a brand new 2010 Toyoto Corolla S (1.8 engine) 3 months ago. The dealer gave me the specs of the fuel consumption as 5.8L/100km for highway and 7.8L/100km for city. During the 3 months of driving in which I've done about 3000km, I am measuring my fuel consumption whenever I fill up the tank and it has always been over 10.2L/100km. Is there something wrong with my car or are the specs out in the woods? I have owned a Sentra and Mazda protege before which had much better in fuel economy.
I have been getting great fuel economy results (see my signature). It seems like you have a few things not in your favor.
1) the engine is still breaking in.
2) you are in the middle of a pretty nasty winter, cold road conditions are not good etc.
3) make sure that you are in D not 3 (a few had had that issue on here)
Remember the fuel ratings are based on optimum driving conditions and your Montreal roads are pretty brutal (I lived there on the island for a year) and the stop and go is some of the harshest in the country. Give it some time & try to be a little lighter on the right foot.

Thank you LeanBurn for your quick reply. Just to clarify:
1. How long does it take for the engine to break-in?
2. Do you put regular gas in the car or the more expensive higher octane version?
You want normal Unleaded gas. As Lean said, give it some time to break in and take it easy on it. As for the time of break in, I am unsure. Winter also kills the mpg as noted as well. I was at 32-34mpg combined in fall, now avg 29-31ish.
hope you enjoy your stay here!!!

Winter blend gas gas a lot to do with fuel mileage as well! I lived in Edmonton, usually I manage to get about 620kms on a full tank in the summer and 550kms on a full tank in winter!
I always see a good 10-15% drop in mpg when the weather turns colder too.

Winter always results in poor fuel economy. Between a brand new car and the winter gas formulation put out by the oil companies, disappointing gas mileage is expected. I'm sure by May, you'll be pleasently surprised.
+1
I bought a 2011 Camry in August. For the first 1000-1500 miles I got decent mileage, being summer. But once my engine was broken in, the temperature dropped, and so did my mileage.
Best fuel economy I've seen is 31 mpg, before the car was broken in. Now I average 25 mpg. Come summer I'll easily see low to mid 30's again Give it time, it will get better.

Under ideal conditions you'll make somewhere near what they say the car should do.
My mom has a CE and I have a Corolla S both 2010, and the S has wider tires, so I noticed a very slight difference in MPG. The CE averages about 8 liters / 100 km and my S about 8.5. Of course I don't drive like my mom does. On the highway, if there is no wind and no hills and I'm going about 90 or 100 kim/h, it should read about 5.5 l / 100 km. If there is a tiny slope, it goes up to 7 liters/100, so it all depends where you're driving. But remember that what Toyota or any other car says it will do is only in ideal conditions.
yeah same here. bought my 2010 in November and I just rolled past the 2k mark. I drive 90% city and I'm averaging around 22mpg. I hope once summer hits it will improve.

just about to roll over 15k on my 2010S....have gotten as high as 36MPG and low of 28 MPG...weight of right foot has a lot to do with the variations along with a million other things....but overall average is a lil over 33 MPG....not too bad and exactly why I bought the rolla and parked the 6k lbs. f-150 with average 16 MPG...
My 2010 corolla S manual gets 33 mpg combined (50% road, 50% city) in the summer and about 29.5 mpg in the winter because of the bigger traffic and now.
