coming from someone who has recovered and been recovered in off-road situations before, this looks like a shady setup...

line not designed for the forces at hand, metal rings (?) tied in the middle, all adds up to a dangerous and potentially deadly recovery. look at it this way - be glad the rope didnt snap under pressure and send that metal ring through your windshield at high velocity.

that said, good for you for helping out a friend. just leave it to the pros with the right equipment next time (or use the shovel and a push by hand). it really doesnt look like it was stuck so bad that it required a snatch-type recovery anyway.

Those are pictures after the suv was pulled out. we also secured the rope onto the metal ring afterwards by hand, because they way they were on would have snapped for sure.

It was -36C that night! But trust me if they can shovel and push the car out, they would! and it is like 2am in the morning, staying out in that kind of temperature is more dangerous than pulling the car with that rope! Tow truck.....maybe like 2 hours wait at that kind of time.

We called AMA, they said the wait time was 6 to 8 hours. Cliffs towing , a local towing company, said 5 hours. We tried shoveling, and rocking. The suv was somewhat high centered.

I was just up in Edmonton this past weekend. It was pretty much the worst road conditions I have ever seen in a populated area. To me anyone that doesn't have dedicated snow tires in that region is asking for trouble.

Those tow ropes we used are the ones that came with Toyota emergency kit that came with our cars. And yes they are shit which is why we had to tie them differenty to the hooks. So anyone who got these just be warned the ends are merely waxed or taped on to the hooks and will snap if not taken apart and tied differently. We r lucky everything worked out it was freezing cold. Just standing outside for 5 mins was painful. Today is the same or worse with more snow and close to -30 again.

I still carry the D ring and 28,000 LB rated recovery strap from my Wrangler in my Corolla as well as various other recovery gear needed for such an operation (blanket for the line for example)
