Altenator Failed

My '09 Carolla S ( 2.7 years old and 43,000 miles) had the Altenator die while i was driving home late the other night. First the battery light came on, then the brake light, then the ABS light, then the gauges started to go haywire. Finally the car stopped accelerating and i had to pull over. I checked the serpentine belt and it looked fine. Yadda Yadda Yadda, Toyota dealer said it was the Altenator and Battery. New altenator = $560 because they claimed its too new to have re-maned ones. Lucky for me i had Geico's Extended Warranty so I only have to pay a $250 deductible.
Oh, and i dont have any upgraded or fancy electronics that suck a lot of juice.

That sucks. Did it show any signs before it fail? Like lights getting dimmer, hard to start, etc?
Did the dealer say why it fail?
Seems too early.

Warranty ran out at 36,000 miles.
No signs prior to it failing.
Alternator not part of the powertrain.

They told you that the alternator is not part of the power train? I would have had them try to explain to you how they can get the car to run without it....last time I checked, the alternator generates the power. Sorry you had this happen. You should call Toyota directly...maybe they can reimburse you if they want to keep you as a customer.

The power train is just that, the engine & transmission while the alternator & all other items are additional parts that allow the power train to work.

It's an electrical item, not every one will last 200k miles. Just replace it & move on. The other option would be to find one in a junk yard.

I thought alternators could be rebuilt for around $100?

Or go to your local auto parts store and ask if they have or can order you one. Because when i went to toyota and its the last time i ever go they wanted to charge me 500 for a damn brake caliper and i bought it for 200 at oreillys and installed it myself. They really try and rip people off.
