Calling all wiring experts!! Never seen this problem before.
The situation:
I put in a rear roof mount DVD. It has dome lights built in that operate the same way as the factory dome light (it has a a switch for off / on / door). I opted NOT to replace the dome light and instead mounted the DVD behind the dome light. I would however like to wire it so the dome lights on the DVD work in addition to the factory dome light. So in short. I have the dvd with dome lights and still have the factory dome light and want both to work.
The problem:
I hooked up the wires to the dome light as instructed. (12V to my pink wire, Door power to my grey, and ground to my white w black stripe.) This blew the cars dome light fuse. I called crutchfield and they said it looks like the toyota is a "negative system" ???? and they have to call the maker of the DVD to ask if it can be hooked up.
Can anyone explain to me why this is a problem and more importantly do you think I can hook up the dome lights onn the DVD?
Thanks. As always I greatly appreciate all the help from you guys and gals.

It sounds like with both dome lights running that it is pulling too much current for the circuit and blowing the fuse. You could put a bigger fuse in it and make it work but that is not advisable because instead of blowing the fuse it may burn up the wiring. It may come down to you making the choice of one or the other or running new wiring for the lights on the DVD unit.

Thanks for the response. I am 100% sure this is not the problem. It blows the fuse while I am still hooking it up. As soon as the wires touch. The lights switches are both in the off position.
Also: Already double checked and I am hooking it up "correctly". I am told the problem is the Toyota wiring. I am told that it is a negative signal that causes the Toyota factory dome light to come on and not a positive as the dvd is wired for. (makes no sense to me - I know nothing about wiring systems).

You may be able to rewire the lights in the dvd unit but not sure. It could be as simple as resoldering the connections or may be impossible to do, hard to say without seeing it. I would also make sure the battery is disconnected when hooking it up as an extra precaution. It may just come down to not being able to use the lights or running new wiring as I mentioned earlier. Also maybe a different unit if you can find one with the lights wired properly for your application.

it sounds like your somehow grounding one of the powerleads to me. the way the dome light works is one side of the bulb is always hot, the other goes to the switch. one terminal on the switch is always open. one terminal is always grounded and one is grounded when the door is open. its been so long since i wired my footwell leds with the dome light i forgot witch wires do what. search for "diy footwell leds using domelight for switch. there is a wiring diagram in that thread and an explanation of how the dome light works. if that doesnt help you out reply and ill get my 12v testlight out and test mine.

I tried wiring it every way I could think of. Nothing gave the desired result. I have resigned to just wiring it to turn the dome lights on the dvd unit on when the door opens or when the switch is turned on and forget about controlling it from the factory dome light switch. So I will have 2 dome lights that work the same way and work independantly of each other instead of all the lights operating from 1 switch.
Also. Crutchfield looked into it in their tech department and had the dvd manufacturer look into it and the official response from both is "you can not make it work".
So case closed.

Ahhhhh, I see what you were trying to do now. Sorry, I thought you were trying to get them to work when the door opened and that was when it was blowing. Yea, wiring into that factory switch to control both sets of lights would be a nightmare to try to sort out. Definitely better off with 2 independent switches like you have.

how does the light on the dvd player work? is it a solid state switch that resets every time the power to the dvd is shut off, or every time power to the light on the dvd is shut off? if thats the case you'd have to by-pass the switch on the dvd player. not worth voiding the warrenty on the dvd player. maybe after the warrenty is up.
